I have read through several threads and seat guru and still confused.
this is my first 747 experience in a decade and the first as SG. please helpp! With seat selection.
QF18 lax to Syd. I'm usually an aisle pref but figured a long midnight flight I would go window for something to lean on - I'm not tall but I dislike climbing over people.
Currently have reserved 46A but wonder if I should go 60K 69K or 70J ? Appreciate advice , it's in 3 weeks

I noticed that some days in Feb they are using an A380 for the flight. Is that usual?

As for your flight, which of the QF 747´s is it?

Thanks Juddles - its a 747-400 V2 ( as per seat guru) description if that makes sense? - on 21/2

2nd Question. I booked a sale fare which at the moment wont allow a points upgrade. Does the opportunity to upgrade open up as we get closer at at the airport ?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Current availability is: J9 C9 D9 I0 W9 R1 T0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q7 G0 X9 E0

It should be worth putting in an upgrade request given that all three classes have 9+ availability.

Looking at the EF seat map for Qf18 on 21/2 46C is reserved, but 46A open, 60H/J/K booked out?

Cheers - sorry to be daft but I have no idea of what those codes mean ?
website won't allow upgrade - are you suggesting I call?

re seat. I got nervous and changed 46A for 60K - should I stay put or change back ?

Sorry x 2 - what is EF ?

You can find the abbreviations here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....viations-and-explanations-5056.html#post69096

Basically, the availability by "fare bucket" breaks down as follows:

Business: J9 C9 D9 I0
Premium Economy:
W9 R1 T0
Economy: Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q7 G0 X9 E0

The fare buckets basically go from highest to lowest, so Y is full fare economy and q, g are deep discount. X is the award flight category, so Qantas is prepared even at this late stage to allow at least 9 award seats to be booked. (Note - QF Fare Buckets https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/calculators/upgradeHelp )

And in each class, Qantas is prepared to sell at least 9 seats, so not a full flight and they might decide that soaking up some QFF points for upgrades is better than nothing.EF = Expert Flyer, a site that allows you for a small fee to search airline availability and seat maps.

Have a good look through the abbreviations page as mentioned above, and some of the other topics on the recommended reading page:

60K is the bulkhead right? There's very little room to stretch your legs here as it doesn't have a cut out. I thought it looked very cramped.
And 46A is an exit row but the door has a large protrusion for the slide so that's quite cramped as well.
I would pick any other seat possible.

QF has been known to send an email to invite those on cheaper fares to upgrade but it's pretty rare from what I can tell - usually done as a promotion rather than individually. So I wouldn't expect any chance to upgrade.

Thanks guys. I have gone to 52H with J empty and k occupied and not a full flight - hoping it may stay that way. I have been successful at asking seats to be blocked on non full flights before - but guesing I cant do that till gate ? and maybe by then i can upgrade or WP seats might be unlocked ?

Sometimes Qantas send out a targetted email allowing upgrades on certain international flights. I have not seen one in a long time.

You won't be able to upgrade at the airport unless you get an op-up.

Thanks for your help and sorry to labour on the point but I'm a novice international traveller.
looking at Expert Flyer (QF18 21/2 lax-syd ) - there are several blocked seat and a row up front - curious as the why ? do they get released to FF closer to flight?
The main questions - Ive picked 48H with J unoccupied - can I ask it to be blocked ? by phone / at gate? 48B shows as occupied / not blocked but neither A or C are occupied . Surely no one would pick it on purpose ? Then there are 3 or 4 seats where EF and Q site show differences cheers!

I paid $30 to choose 43A seat on QF 127 which is a bulkhead and as my daughter is tall and this won't give her any leg room.

Why if I try to change that seat does it ask for another $30, and how do I get around it. Why can't their system recognise this!

How tall? There is a cut-out there. I am 5' 9" and with outstretched legs cannot reach the bulkhead. I have seen reports on AFF of much taller people not having an issue.

She is a tad under 6", and this is a whY seat - if that applies to Y then I am happy as she won't have row in front recline. Whadday think as as I paid an extra 30 bucks for the seat and they 'reward' you by not being able to change it.

If she is only a few inches taller than me she won't have any issues in 43A. I have 43H pre-allocated for flight back in June.

Great thanks. And ... the row in front is PE and there's a bulk head, so there's no row in front reclining into you?

There is a bulkhead immediately in front of row 43 so no one can recline into your space. And yes the next cabin is premium economy.
