Seatguru and Seatexpert don't list 737's on their sites. Just wondering for those that have been on Qantas 737-800's whether the front row of Y (row 4), behind the J seats, has lots of legroom?

Thanks.

It has a fair bit, in my opinion it's the best seat in economy on an 800 series, though unfortunately as a Silver you've got buckleys and none of being allocated it as they tend to block it off for CL and WP, especially on the more popular corporate routes.

The best option is to arrive early for check-in and ask for an exit row seat.

Legroom - yes. Almost comparable with the exit rows. HOWEVER, as it is behind the last row of J, which on the 800's is dedicated J seating as opposed to the convertibles on the 400's there is effectively only two seats in front of you, so only two places to stow bags under the seat in front of you. Someone has to miss out if you have a carry-on and a brief-case.

Thanks for the responses. I am doing on-line check-in now and I took 25D on the way over (best available) and 4F on the way home as it was available!! The lack of storage doesn't bother me as I'll just wack my bag in the overhead anyway. Glad to hear it has plenty of legroom.

No longer an online check-in virgin!!! Very handy as I only have 1 bag as carry-on.

Some routes you've got buckleys as a WP as well.

I'm doing MEL-BNE-MEL. I assume that's a reasonably busy route??

The exit rows 13 and 14 are blocked out, but row 4 is available. That's why I was wondering if it's in fact any good - the whole reason for this thread. I thought since it's available, perhaps it's no better than a normal seat. but you guys said it's decent so....woohoo!

Its possible to snag row 4 using OLCI when a Platinum of CL member has been pre-allocated and they have changed their flight plans, leaving it available to anyone to snag if they time the OLCI just right.

It is a decent seat, and I do try to move myself to them if they come up! But generally you will only get one if for some reason someone has vacated the seat.

I usually find I can only snag row 4 using OLCI when they're using 400 series, and im usually 2nd or 3rd to checkin.

Not this little WP duck ... running at ~60% preallocated and ~80% in seat 4C/D since OLCI was implemented. ;)

I think I have had it allocated once since OLCI, but have been able to move myself there a few times! (mind you I did get downgraded to Gold last year, but haven't had many 737 flights since then!)

There is your problem :p . You need to wait and time the OLCI process for just after the person who was pre-allocated the row 4 seat has changed their flight. Then you can snag it through the OLCI process.

Thanks for the tip NM, must appreciated.

Bragging right here.

Coming back from Oz Fest I got allocated 4C on a brand new 738 and serfty got 5C :!:

Yeah! some flights do contribute to that ~20% failure ...

Basically what I do is OLCI and if it's one of those coveted row 4 seats let it rest.

Otherwise I keep checking every ½ to 1 hour and snaffle any better seating that arises.

I found that early/mid afternoon is about the time when I can eventually pin that seat down for a weekday evening flight.

Best Y row on the plane IMO. :)

The very slight reduction in leg room over an exit row is worth being at least 9 rows forward as far as I'm concerned. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

Sounds about the time you would know if you can go home early (or you will be sticking around a bit longer!)

Row 4 on the 738 is the best row in WHY.

I am not bothered about the lack of overhead bin space and I do not fancy the exit rows on a 738 at all.

Well I'm now back from my MEL-BNE-MEL excursion and I must agree row 4 is just superb. Given the small size of the 738 as a whole, the amount of legroom is devine in row 4.

Thanks for the tip gents.

Oh and I will definately be using the OLCI on domestic flights from now on. What a time saver!!
