I think in order to be absolutely fair it's best that I post this earth shattering item.:mrgreen:
Incident: Virgin Blue E190 at Perth on Jan 18th 2011, bird strike
A Virgin Blue Embraer ERJ-190, registration VH-ZPH performing flight DJ-1721 from Perth,WA to Karratha,WA (Australia), departed Perth's runway 21 when the aircraft ingested a bird into one of its engines (CF34) just prior to rotation. The crew continued the takeoff, levelled off at 3000 feet with both engines remaining operative and returned to runway 21 for a safe landing about 25 minutes after departure and taxied to the apron.

Yeah but the headline for the other story could have been
"Nadi hotels struggle with 375 extra guests after QF diversion":mrgreen:

Or alternatively "Nadi hotels delighted to receive 375 extra guests..."

Cheers skip

Whilst there is a lot of QF bashing and blah blah blah going around, with this many incidents (notwithstanding the A380s) on engines isn't someone asking the hard questions at QF HQ, "Alright folks, this isn't a joke anymore - what's going on with our engines?"

One would need to compare the shutdown rate for QF versus airlines with similar fleets....

Not that it matters much. Besides, with the A380s shut out temporarily for the moment, QF is almost on the verge of struggling to meet all its schedule competently.

It wouldn't matter what airline; with a string of problems like this it would be folly to not be concerned and not to believe that perhaps there is a possible greater problem or systematic problem that deserves a non-trivial investigation.

+1 considering the amount of press even a trivial domestic turn back is attracting for qf why arent they upping their checks for example or taking pre-emptive
action...... surely the loss in $$$ from bad publicity is worth the extra cost.

Constantly seeing that qf pr chick on the news ain't helping things!

You could argue that Qantas tend to be more conservative and will divert and land their planes, rather than press on, as some other airlines might do.

As it is, my understanding is that the number of turnbacks for Qantas is low amongst its peers.

It's the Australian media, and it's Qantas.

There have been 12 engine failures or shutdowns this year. Which one did you hear about?

There have been 19 diversions this year. Which one did you hear about?

If your answer was 'the one about Qantas' - I'm not surprised because the other 11 engines failures and 18 diversions don't sell papers in Australia.

I agree they are conservative and the pilots very proficient however Joe Public is only listening to the media noise.

That's the problem; every airline suffers from engine problems, and each deals with it in their own way. QF is in the news, and it keeps coming.

I seem to remember another airline's reservation system melted down and flights were disrupted for days, and a volcano shut airspace around the world, and etc, etc
