A Virgin Blue Embraer ERJ-190, registration VH-ZPH performing flight DJ-1721 from Perth,WA to Karratha,WA (Australia), departed Perth's runway 21 when the aircraft ingested a bird into one of its engines (CF34) just prior to rotation. The crew continued the takeoff, levelled off at 3000 feet with both engines remaining operative and returned to runway 21 for a safe landing about 25 minutes after departure and taxied to the apron.
Whilst there is a lot of QF bashing and blah blah blah going around, with this many incidents (notwithstanding the A380s) on engines isn't someone asking the hard questions at QF HQ, "Alright folks, this isn't a joke anymore - what's going on with our engines?"
One would need to compare the shutdown rate for QF versus airlines with similar fleets....
If that was QF, the headlines would be QF kills innocent birds.![]()

+1 considering the amount of press even a trivial domestic turn back is attracting for qf why arent they upping their checks for example or taking pre-emptive
action...... surely the loss in $$$ from bad publicity is worth the extra cost.

You could argue that Qantas tend to be more conservative and will divert and land their planes, rather than press on, as some other airlines might do.
As it is, my understanding is that the number of turnbacks for Qantas is low amongst its peers.
It's the Australian media, and it's Qantas.
There have been 12 engine failures or shutdowns this year. Which one did you hear about?

If your answer was 'the one about Qantas' - I'm not surprised because the other 11 engines failures and 18 diversions don't sell papers in Australia.
