We flew Qatar Melbourne to Stockholm last year, then Venice back to Melbourne. What was very good was that Qatar's total return price was less than other major carriers were charging just for the first leg to Stockholm alone. So choosing Qatar was a no-brainer, and their service was excellent. I couldn't put my finger on it then, but I knew something was better in that flight experience, than that with other carriers I'd flown.

We've just returned after again flying Qatar, this time Melbourne to Tunis then Venice to Melbourne. They were again easily the best on price for the direct flights. After four hours on the first leg out to Doha, I had very bad back pain for the remaining nine or ten hours, and spent much of the time in agony walking around the front bit of the plane, and at the side of the toilet area - where I could stretch and try relieve the pain.

This actually proved quite instructive as I figured out why Qatar flights are better than other carrier's flights - namely, the staff are constantly cleaning the toilets. It didn't matter that there may have been a long queue to use them, Qatar staff went in and cleaned them.

Meals.
The meals are basically a choice of
Regular beef type meal, or
Weird Chicken (i.e. something Asiatic I never heard of), or
Something Vegetarian e.g risotto or noodles.

Only problem for me was that on flight Venice to Doha, I was in row 18 - fairly far up towards the front of the A330 - and my wife got the last beef meal. I was stuck with the chicken meal, which wasn't too bad, except for one big lump of chicken with chicken skin on it - which I automatically gag at the thought of eating chicken skin. On the flight Doha to Melbourne in the A380, we were only four seats from the front, and I noticed everyone around me, except for one woman behind me, ordering the beef meal. I suspect some may have missed out on the beef further back.

The other oddity is that while they provide tasty foccacia bread on their flights, that one has to ask for butter to go with it, rather than it being automatically provided. Problem with this was, that as we were having the last meal of breakfast (scrambled eggs) and I asked for butter...... and they had run out of butter on the plane.

On the plus side, the one thing Qatar did better than Emirates (last time I flew with them was four years ago), is that they serve drinks with the meals in one go, using one cart. On Emirates one cart would bring out the food and later another cart would bring out the drinks. The Emirates system worked okay on smaller planes, with the drinks arriving about a third of the way into eating the meal, but was hopeless on the A380 with the drinks arriving at near the end, if not the end of the meals when I last flew with them.

Qatar does do the the same thing as Emirates if one asks for a soft drink - they open a can and give you a little glass of it. Always remember to ask for and get the full can. I can never understand why if one asks for a beer, one gets a full can, but if one asks for a soft drink, one gets a tiny glass.

It used to be a downside for me that the Venice- Melbourne trip had an 18 hour wait between flights at Doha - which meant having to get a hotel for the night, and taxi fares. But now, because of my back, I treat the rest as a positive. Huge 55 to 60 square meter hotel rooms aren't expensive in Doha, and my wife and I really enjoy lounging around in them, going out for occasional excursions to shopping centres (since we saw all the major sights last year). Doha is a place we feel quite safe and comfortable in.

In fact, the cost of the hotels - even if you don't get the special deal that Qatar often offers for them - added to the price of the trip was still less than the Emirates price for the round trip. Seems like a bargain to me.

Renato

Thank you for a comprehensive report. We flew Qatar for the first time a week ago in business class. Excellent service.

We have flown QR for the last 7 trips in economy and some business (depends on funds) Their Business product is great, but their economy is OK. But the food service is...........well. I am silver and wife is gold, and twice they have served everybody else and have not served us ???? Both times we have had to ask where is our meals ??? Both times we have got stunned looks on their faces. Both times and bear in mind our QR status, we have had to take what they have left. Once we declined and the other after we complained bitterly they gave us business class meals. This was in economy, in-between these flights we few the MEL-DOHA and DOHA-MEL in business we couldn't fault them. We raised the issue with the cabin manager in business about it and he smiled and made no comment. We now order special meals to make sure we get something. Having read above I wonder if this is a common problem with QR.

Any idea how do their Business Fare prices compare with the competition on the same route?
Are they the hands down winner like with their economy fares?

Nice report.

As a current QF Gold the downside to QR Y is the coughpy oneworld Business lounge in DOH, versus much better options if travelling with EK, QF or CX
Thanks. I'm surprised. Not that I have anything to do with Business or lounges.
But I'd have thought that an airport which has people grabbing your luggage and taking it to the check-in gate - and refusing any tips - would be skimpy in the lounges.
Cheers,
Renato

Amazing.

Did your check your meal preferences in your account, and see something odd which led to the missing meals? Otherwise, it makes no sense.

Which reminds me, due to a mix-up with our travel agent on our first trip (not Qatar's fault), we were put down for Bland Meals.

I'm not sure whether Qatar deserve or do not deserve kudos for this, but their Bland Meals are the blandest thing I've ever had the misfortune to put in my mouth. My wife thought them awful and asked what I had done? Thankfully, the staff dug up other meals for us to eat. I then had some difficulty changing this Bland preference on our trip details and profile. Their site wouldn't let me manually change the preferences for both of us on the trips, nor permanently change it as the default preference against our names. I had to email their service desk to accomplish this.

I regularly price them for flights into Europe. Their regular fares tend to be only a little cheaper than, say EK but considerably cheaper than QF via LHR for instance (not surprisingly). Ex ADL is sometimes cheaper than ex SYD or MEL. Their specials on the other hand are sensational value for the quality of the flights - especially QSuites.

Thanks. I'm surprised. Not that I have anything to do with Business or lounges.

Not sure if moa999 was referring to the Al Mourjan Business Lounge in DOH (QR's lounge terminology at DOH is a bit funny#), (EDIT: No - see post below)but I'm amazed if it was called 'coughpy'. Very large floor area, Two dining areas, two shower areas, heaps of space, large separate business area which never gets busy. The only material fault I find in it is that there is no pour-your-own booze. but certainly plenty there, when you ask for it.

DOH is a great efficient airport too. I once made a connection in under 20 minutes, plane door to plane door, including going through transit security and going from one concourse to another, after the inbound was delayed.

# they put OW Emeralds in whY into a "First Class Lounge" which is anything but - I would call it not First standard.

We are booked to stop for two nights in Doha from Adelaide in economy, then on to Barcelona. I keep hearing about the awful lounge we will have access to when we fly out of Doha, as QF platinum. Might be better to stay out in the main area? Anyway, really good prices and it’s our first time using Qatar and visiting Doha. I presume we can use QF lounge in Adelaide before departure? Open to any advice or info regulars on Qatar feel like offering. Thanks.

I had to get to the bottom of this other business lounge, and the explanation is here:

I knew there was a 'First class lounge' for OW Emeralds (not really First standard), but never knew there was a 'Business Lounge' for OW Sapphire   Sorry for any confusion I may have introduced above. I only fly QR Biz through DOH, so have never had to go to thge other Biz lounge, although I did once accidently go into the other 'First Class lounge'.

BTW, I think you can purchase access into the Al Mourjan 'proper' Lounge, as you can to the Al Safwa 'proper' First lounge :)

As QF Plat, you will be able to use the 'other' First Lounge at DOH. You'd never call it a First lounge, but its better than the concourse, which is just typical duty free, eateries etc.

Doha is probably only worth a day. A drive through downtown, a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art, and a visit to the souq would probably do it. Have you booked your accommodation through QR? Maybe the Oryx Rotana? Its OK, for the price you pay through QR. Free shuttle bus there, IIRC ... maybe 20 minutes now.

Yes, but its before security & immigration of course.

I visited Al Mourjan last September as flew Biz from SIN-DOH-MAD, then BCN-DXB-SIN on the way back.
I have to say I was not impressed with QR. It is probably the best hard product, but even the J lounge was underwhelming in terms of food options. I also found the signaling around the airport was pretty bad. We wer in the "express" lane at 5am just to go through security and it was messy and not well organised. Airport staff were very unhelpful and finding the lounge was a mission. We were there in the morning and the options were not substantial.

I also went to showers closer to the quiet area which was meant to be quicker and we had a 30 minute wait. As an international hub, to be honest this is pretty unacceptable. The lounge is aesthetically beautiful but feels pretty sparse.

In contrast, DXB was way easier. Yes, a lot busier but I found it very efficient. We went through security quickly, got to the Lounge with a la carte options. Yes, perhaps in Y the catering is not as good as they only have 2 options (I believe QR has 3), but seriously not much to complain about if you are on the A380.

I may have had an off and odd experience that day with QR, but it didn't make me get as desperate to try them again as all Youtubers rave on about them.

Thank you. madrooster is doing the accomm through QR with us....heard Marriott Marquis Is really good but will keep your recommendation in mind if that’s not an option. We arrive at 5am, meet up with family coming in from Melb on QR around same time. Not too sure how we will handle that yet.......might need to book a night just so we have somewhere to go. We have the next day and night before flying out. Will spread our sightseeing out, based on your advice!

And it’s good to know that even if the lounge isn’t great, it’s better than the concourse.

Not necessarily a recommendation! It used to be the most convenient hotel to the airport before the reconfiguration, now its 20 or so minutes, so others come into the frame. Its not near anything, now, so a place downtown probably just as 'convenient'.

Well, I'm not sure my wife would agree with you. Depends on whether one likes walking around the shopping malls (Villagio is really good, City Centre a bit drab) and the Souqs, and the Katara Cultural centre is worth a look (you get driven around the place on a buggy for free). We filled in three days of looking around Doha without any problem.

The thing missing from Doha - which I find amazing - is a tourist map. Most other cities have one in hotels for free, or somewhere to buy.

Last year we set off one night for Souq Waqif, which wasn't too far from Best Western Hotel (which turned out to be the night life capital of Doha). We got lost and instead found ourselves in the middle of a really lively shopping district with heaps of perfume stores. Turned out it was called Souq Al Badi, and I still haven't found it on a map.

This year, it was only after reading Trip Advisor reviews, that I found we had the pretty neat shopping mall (Al Mirqab) ten minutes walk from our hotel.
Cheers,
Renato

Well, maybe this map from the Qatar website will help a bit.

If you peruse it by clicking on the red balloons, you will quickly find Souq Waqif, near the Islamic Arts Centre, and Villagio Mall further away, plus lots of other malls I didn't know existed. But I can't find Al Mirqab Mall which I visited the other day, nor Souq Al Badi.

Just remember one thing. Taxis are pretty cheap, and have Karwa written on them. They charge 10 Riyals ($4) at flagfall, and that gets you a fair way before Riyals start being added to the meter. Though from the airport there is a real 25 Riyal flagfall and Riyals start being added straight away. No matter where you are, people will come along asking if you want a taxi - but they don't have a meter, and generally offer to take you somewhere for a price that is double what the real taxis charge.

You'll have fun.

Our flights were award flights. However we had friends travelling at the same time (not on our flights and a different date), they purchased business class fares when they were on sale and it was about $6500 each return. Much cheaper than Qantas They were very happy.

If you don’t mind repositioning to Asia you will often find very good J return fares on QR.
Was recently $2600-2700 to Europe from several Asian ports and occasionally they will dip lower

Excellent thanks. Where did you get your local currency? Presume it’s needed for taxis, if not much else?

There's an ATM adjacent the luggage pickup. which you go to while waiting for the suitcases.
As an indication, cost of taxi from airport to Souk Waqif area is around 50 Riyals. Cost back to the airport is around 25 Riyals.

Determining how much you need really depends on what you want to buy and how many taxi rides you take. If you want the lowest price souveneirs, Souk Waqif has them, but you need local currency to pay the stall holders. If you buy the more expensive ones at say Villagio Mall, then you can pay for them by credit card. Similarly if you eat at cheap places, pay about 40 Riyal in cash for two, at better restaurants and hotels use card and pay they higher prices.

Just a note, before ordering something like a cappuccino, ask the price. Some places are reasonable at $3 or $4 equivalent a cup, whereas some hotels charge ridiculous amounts like $9 to $14 equivalent a cup.

I am silver and wife is gold, and twice they have served everybody else and have not served us ???? Both times we have had to ask where is our meals ??? Both times we have got stunned looks on their faces.

I'm REALLY surprised !!!

If I may ask ;

Were you & your wife were asleep during the meal service ?

Reason I ask, during one of Intl Y, I was sleeping and the FA didn't wake me up for meal service. However, when I eventually woke up, the FA came by and asked if I'd like to have my meals ... I was surprised that they remembered though ...

Or, was DND (Do Not Disturb) set by mistake on your seat ? It's a red sticker put on top of the head-rest of your Y seat.

This used to happen a lot on SQ. SQ's FA put a DND red sticker on your seat if you prefer not to be disturbed during the whole duration of the flight. This also includes FA's not waking you for meal/drink service.

Once we declined and the other after we complained bitterly they gave us business class meals.

That's a good & just gesture ... appreciate it :)

We raised the issue with the cabin manager in business about it and he smiled and made no comment

That's not right .. the Cabin Manager, though can't and probably won't do anything on the spot. Usually they take a mental note of your seat # (and/or FF information) and let the FA know ...

Alternatively, have you tried raising a complaint with QR ?
