We are aware that some customers are receiving automated phone calls purporting to be from Qantas. These calls are not from us, and can easily be identified as unauthentic. Qantas consultants will always call customers directly to discuss their bookings and do not use an automated phone system when contacting customers proactively.
Recipients are advised not to provide personal details or respond to the automated prompts.
Scammers use a range of mechanisms, including “harvesting” programs that scour numerous sources on the Internet, to look for customer information. It is also often the case that the recipients of the scam are not customers of the company purporting to make the phone call – which is why individuals who are not necessarily Qantas customers might have also received a phone call.
Authorities have been advised of the scam calls and are investigating.

I got a different one today-was an SMS from Jetstar saying they had cancelled my flight and so ring this number!
Funny I don't have any JQ bookings.

Yes got this one last Thursday, rang my office phone "You have been given a $900 gift voucher for your next Qantas flight. Please press 1 to collect this gift" - automated call

Thanks for that...

I get scam phone calls and also scam e mails every day.

Generally they are all the normal ones you hear about everyday.. You know Microsoft and the banks. I am getting one at the moment saying from some Telco in HKG that my services are about to be cancelled if I do not click on this web link.

The e mails have been coming for that last few weeks and my services have been cancelled about 3 times now...

And you put in your account number and pin? Is that what they are trying to get?

I never get scam calls on my mobile. I get unwanted phone calls but not scam.

It was my office desk landline. No caller ID, answered phone and got the automated message. Didn't bother, put the phone down as it was obviously suss. Probably wanted QFF or CC details so can authorise the "refund"

Other than getting your landline disconnected, has anyone heard if its possible to disable or not allow incoming phone calls from overseas?

I've heard of thrd party devices, such as truecall blocker, that can be setup that way. I am not sure how good they are though. Telstra also have an Unwelcome Calls team, that may provide some advice,

We have silent ph. No. had one call in past 6 years, mentioned it to caller he hung up.

Thanks for sharing this information with AFF markis10.

Further to this, we're encouraging customers to refer to Scam Watch: SCAMwatch home

Isn't this just a new revenue stream for an ailing QF? They'll only skin a few $K from your CC and everyone (AJ) goes home happy.

Qantas and other companies are totally to blame for these scams in my opinion.

I had Qantas call me (it was legit as I was expecting the call). They ask for my information and pin code over the phone to identify me. I point out that how do I know they aren't scammers. The lady tells me she isn't. I suggested that's the same answer a real scammer would also give.

My point here is, if companies actually do this themselves, they are setting their customers up to be scammed. Companies should never ask for this information over the phone in the first place. Other companies that expect this information from me have include CBA and Macquarie. My response is to just confirm that the call is recorded. Then I say, I'm happy to give the information out but I am now no longer responsible for any breach of my account if they are going to ask for such information over the phone.

I've heard of thrd party devices, such as truecall blocker, that can be setup that way. I am not sure how good they are though. Telstra also have an Unwelcome Calls team, that may provide some advice,

Telstra can block all international calls on your home phone line if requested. I don't think there is a cost involved.

In my opinion the simplest way to deal with Telstra at the moment is through the 24x7 App on their Facebook page, rather than ringing them and hanging on hold.

Alternatively you can get Calling Number Display (sometimes known as CND / CLI / CallerID) enabled on your line for a few $ a month, and get a phone handset that can display the number that is dialling in. If it's a withheld number or overseas number, simply let it ring out or send it to answer machine.

Third option is get a call blocker. There are various devices available. Some have a list of unwelcome numbers that you add as you get unwanted calls. Once you've received the unwanted call, you push a button and if the number is available (i.e. not withheld) it is added to the memory. All future calls from this number are rejected. The TrueCall Blocker is a more expensive product with more features. It can be set up to reject all international or withheld numbers if required, and allows you to screen any calls not automatically rejected.
