Qantas Wine is an anomaly - a single transaction usually credits across multiple activity statement lines, so I don't think the cap applies.

Just ordered Thorn Clarke Premium Barossa Six at $474 with 24474 points at 1.94 cents each. With a upcoming flight Tamworth to Canberra via Sydney, it works out cheaper to buy the wine and then use the points.

What's also interesting is that it takes the same number of points to fly Tamworth-Canberra via Sydney as it does for a direct Tamworth-Sydney flight, though you pay $139 in fees instead of $62.

Points required are grouped in distance bands hence the same number of points, the +++ is just reflective of more airports snouts in the trough in the form of their fees for processing you.
