Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Oh wow! That’s the best F lounge at LHR. I always went there for QF2 and didn’t seem crazy busy.

I think it depends on the time of day and what is happening with the CX flights, which obviously take priority.

I was there on Saturday afternoon and they had the 'triage' guy outside the lift redirecting non-CX pax. One of the earlier CX flights was delayed, so there were three CX departures within a 90-120 minute window. From memory an A350-1000, 777-300ER and A350-900.

It was difficult to find a seat in both the F lounge or dining area until the first departure left.

Qf38 successful whilst waiting in Lounge after an SMS saying no earlier in the day. Surprised since i thought there was a few P1 on the flight based on seat selections.

Either I got the J1 or a few more J seats opened up from QF2 not operating.

Edit: perfect timing for me to notice, get a new BP and shuffle off to QR lounge which will cut my distance to the gate in half.

Yep, late morning or after 4pm, access is often restricted.

Best times for non CX access with current schedules are 12:30pm-3:30pm and before 9am.

I haven't had a upgrade for several years. When I was platinum they were fairly frequent on both domestic and international flights , ,at least pre covid.I fly less now as a LTG and even the fully flex work flights dont score a domestic upgrade. However , they do also seem to find me a seat with extra leg room and a spare seat beside it, so perhaps that counts these days as a minor upgrade.

Next time I will ask

Just to clarify, by 'requesting' we mean lodging a Classic Upgrade request, which should yield reasonably good results on domestic routes for QFF Gold. You can also ask about an On Departure Upgrade request within 3 hours of the departure at service desks or in the Qantas app. Both cost the same amount of points.

I think it's fair to say that 'free' upgrades or op-ups are extremely uncommon on Qantas for all status tiers except CL, except when Qantas runs 'surprise and delight' promotions which seem to target Platinum and Platinum One. Free upgrades are nearly unheard of for Gold and below.

An interesting arti;lce from the US AP news site on US airlines chasing the top end of the market.
I haven't flown domestically in the US for several years but even then there was a considerable qualitative difference between economy and business. In particular with transit through security .The US lounge , seating and food experience made Qantas domestic economy look good.
I noted the line about why US FFs are being nudged out of complementary upgrades.but use of pricing tools.

US FFs don't get any lounge access unless flying First, so the lounge situation for Qantas domestic economy is far, far superior?
Pretty sure even domestic F doesn’t get lounge access across most US carriers on a standalone ticket. It’s all paid lounge access. Why some AA flyers jump on QP discounts when available.
