Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Can anyone help me understand how upgrades work when flying QF1 SYD-SIN-LHR? Are they applied to each segment, and are they processed simultaneously or separately? Should I be searching in EF SYD-LHR, or as individual segments to get an understanding of loadings.

TIA and apologies for what may be a silly question!
The single leg upgrade that dairyfloss mentioned happened to me last month - I flew to Heathrow on QF71 and QF1 (PER-SIN-LHR), was only upgraded on QF1 SIN-LHR. Was rejected on QF71 and approved on QF1 at the same time - they processed simultaneously. Upgrade was processed back when I was bronze status too, anything can happen :)

QF 71 is tough, never been upgraded on that flight.

That's slightly different as you were on two different flights.

For flights that have the same number all the way through, I've only ever been upgraded on all or nothing.

We'll hopefully find out soon. SYD-SIN was zeroed out in J and W a week or so ago so am not expecting anything on that segment. But the SIN-LHR segment is quite open at J9 and W9.

This is a question for any member in the know. Not sure if it's asked before.
Out of curiosity, on these flights with 1 flight number but a transit point, when requesting an upgrade, does QF give you the option of seeking an upgrade for just part of the flight even though one is booked on the flight to the final destination?
If you wish to seek an upgrade for the whole flight, is the points required the sum of the 2 parts or just the 1 or does it works out the same?
Thanks in advance.

I only had the option to apply for the upgrade on the entire journey SYD-SIN-LHR. I can also only select a single seat for the entire journey, which I find strange as loadings are obviously very different across each segment.

It’s been like that for as long as I can remember - that can impose an additional constraint on seat choices for late comers.

Just spoke to the call centre and they advised that on routes like QF1, upgrades are only possible on all segments. Single-segment upgrades aren't possible. Reports in this thread from a while back suggest that isn't the case.

You can’t request them for separate legs, but you can definitely receive and be debited for them accordingly

I think that they will only give you the first leg if they can give you both legs, but if they can't you are still eligible for just the second leg (although you may only find out at boarding via a beep at the gate).

If I book an economy award flight on Qantas with Alaska Mileage plan can I request an upgrade with Qantas points?
Or only paid tickets and Qantas awards available for upgrade?

On QF1, if you are booked to travel from SYD through to LHR you can only request an upgrade for the whole journey (no split request is possible). If you are a solo traveller and check the “upgrade at the gate” option on the upgrade request, you become eligible to be upgraded for the second leg which will only be confirmed at the gate when boarding in SIN. This option isn’t available for couples and families booked on the same booking ref. If you are booked on QF1 originating out of SIN (eg which we have done after a day or two stopover) you can request an upgrade for the SIN-LHR leg as normal.
