Re: Qantas Ultimate Amex: 100k Points, Flight/Credit, 0% BT (New 5/8/17 - Exp 28/9/17

Hello everyone

Exceladdict has explained the current promo from Amex quite well. After the recent reorganising by the banks and lowering of points earn rates, their credit card points earnings are not as good as this card (comparing with CBA and Westpac Altitude Black). This is now my default Amex I use when I can use it. I got this card on a similar sign up bonus 8 months ago and have enjoyed using it, particularly when using my phone's Apple Pay to pay for things. The customer service has been excellent.

Additional info on what has already been posted:

In addition to Exceladdict's info, earn rates are:

  • 2.5 QFF pts/$ on Qantas selected products and services
  • 0.5 QFF pts/$ on government bodies including AustPost AND ATO
  • 1.5 QFF pts/$ on everything else.

Complimentary flight
You get a complimentary economy QF flight between certain Australian capital cities, but you must spend on a qantas product or service (eg. a flight) to activate it. PM me for a much cheaper solution to do this otherwise, wait until after 31 Oct 2017, when complimentary flights will be replaced with a $450 travel credit which is applicable on a single booking. You won't need to spend on a qantas product/service after after 31 Oct to qualify. To redeem the flights, simply call Amex to book Qantas flights and you can book multiple flights, then apply the credit. Flights that costs more than $450, you pay the difference. Any left over credit is forfeited. For example, you can book 2 return flights and use the credit but you must do so on the single transaction. If you book them on separate occasions, then you only get the credit on the first trip and then, pay the second one as normal. Flights don't have to be within Australia. You also have the option to claim for the original complimentary flight instead, up to 30 April 2018. The travel credit resets at the end of the membership year.

Lounge access
The Amex lounge at SYD international airport is very nice. There's one to be opened in Melb late 2017.
In addition to the 2 Amex lounge passes per year, I've read that there will also be 2 passes to a Qantas club lounge (great for domestic travel times) or Intl business lounge also (see this review on the high life travel)

Travel Insurance
Pay for your trips on the card and the domestic and international travel insurance is activated. Carry your statement with you to prove this when you need to claim. For claims, from experience, I emailed for delayed luggage and with receipts of purchases for basics I received a $200 payout promptly and without much problem. The email communication was efficient (much easier if you are travelling and don't have mobile credit).

QFF Joining fee
You need to have a QFF account. If not, the joining fee is $90 for an Oz resident (free if you are not). You can avoid the fee by following this link to the qantas joining site (valid until 31 Dec 2017). There are a few other ways of joining fee free also. The above link is easy enough.

Extra points
This is my favourite card now and there's also the local champion "game" you can involve yourself in for extra points earn. With this, if you are the most frequent visitor to a business, you double your points earn.

If you liked the info I provided, I would appreciate it very much if you click on this referral link to the Amex sign up page by 28 Sept 2017 to sign up. (Disclosure: I get a referee bonus of 30k points and you get 100k)

Thank you and I hope you enjoy using this card as I do.

How long does it take for the 30K bonus points to appear?

Hi Akenne,

I just sent you a PM, hopefully it worked. If not, if you could use my referral that I posted earlier in the thread (and have pasted below also) that would be very much appreciated, it will greatly assist me and my wife in organising a very special honeymoon next year.

Have a great day and enjoy the card, it's a great offer currently.

Thanks

Hey Sam, out of curiosity, when you changed from Premium to Ultimate, did your referral link change for the Qantas cards or did it stay the same (if you took any notice)?

It did, but as I'm a Moderator I was able to edit my previous posts :p

If you need that doing for yourself, just open a Conversation with me and include the details and I'll sort you out when I can.

Hey guys,

Thinking of getting this as it's one of the last remaining 1.5ppd Amex cards out there linked directly to Qantas... could you help answer a few questions for me please as I can't find the answers on the Amex T&C's.

1. 0.5 ppd for government spend e.g. ATO (the Amex call centre said this also applied to utilities like Electricity, but I can't see that called out in any T&C's.) Do you still get 1.5ppd for Energy Australia bills etc?
2. With the $450 Qantas travel credit, does this have to be used all at once, or can you book a $200 flight, and then 6mths later book a $250 flight?
3. The original post mentioned they thought you'd get Qantas points & status when booking with the $450 voucher, can anyone confirm this is correct?

Thanks!

Hi big_RED,

1. The 0.5ppd applies to any government body, which will include some electricity providers. For instance up my way Ergon is our sole electricity provider and it is a government owned corporation, so only earns 0.5ppd if I pay my bills on AMEX. So you'll only earn 0.5ppd on spend through government owned corporations, such as local government rates, water rates through companies like Sunwater and any government owned energy providers.
2. Yes,the $450 travel credit has to be used all in one go.
3. Yes, you'll get points and status credits when using the travel credit. This is because you're not actually getting a free flight, you're still paying for the flights you intend to book and the travel credits just offset a portion/cost of the flights.

If you do decide to go ahead with the card, it would be great if you could use my referral link http://amex.com.au/refer/aarynbpeYJ

It's a very good card for everyday spend if you're looking to Qantas, and the $450 travel credit practically makes it a 'free' card (assuming you do a bit of travel normally).

Cheers

Thanks mate - happy to use your referal link - although I did want to call and sign-up and I have many Amex cards and although they did say I could get the 100k points I want them to 100% confirm it again.

1 last question - Amex site says "Complimentary Qantas domestic return Economy flight every year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services". I believe I've read that the new $450 voucher is just given to you when you call and you don't have to spend with Qantas first anymore. Is that correct?

That is fair enough. I was in the same situation in regards to being unsure whether I'd receive the bonus points so I just went through the online chat and when I got the clear, I saved/emailed a transcript of the conversation if AMEX ever did try and deny me.

In regards to the $450 voucher, yes you are correct in that the travel credit is received every year the card is held (as long as you've paid the annual fee and account is in good order) and that there is no requirement to make a spend through Qantas to receive it, unlike the current free flight option.

Happy to help. However the guy on the phone said as I was a current Amex customer you may not get the points as it has to be a new customer.
The only reason I got the 100k in points is I have the DJs Amex, and they say that is a different system and not a real Amex so I am a new 'real Amex' customer...

Thanks again, it looks all good with the referral bonus points posting in my account last night.

I'm guessing the referral bonus points must have the same rules applied to them as the card sign on bonus' with the DJ Amex cards being in completely separate categories, because it does say in the 'Refer a Friend' T&C's:
  • You cannot refer a friend who already has one of our cards or has held one in the last 18 months.
So very interesting, but happy they posted!

Enjoy the 100K QFF bonus points as well!!

Awesome! Must be the same rules. The guy even checked with his manager and came back saying you had to be 100% brand new to get the referral points. So there you go! Enjoy yours as well.

Hi everyone, I'd like to add my referal link for the Amex Qantas Ultimate card

I have only been a card member since March this year , having never held any Amex card before. After reading this forum and using a link I got my own card. If you decide to apply for the card, you'll receive 100,000 Qantas points when you spend $1500. Other info about the card:

  • Earn 1.5 Qantas Points6 for every $1 spent on Card purchases, except spend at government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent
  • Complimentary Qantas domestic return Economy flight every year* after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services
  • Enjoy complimentary access up to two entries per year to the American Express Lounge at Sydney International Airport

Here is my referral link: http://amex.com.au/refer/terriwOuIS

Huge thanks to anyone who uses my link :)

Anyone know if Energy Australia gets 1.5ppd or 0.5?

I'm pretty sure it's a private company and not government owned?

I just checked my points list and Energy Australia earned 1.5 points.
From memory I was charged a small fee for paying with a credit card on the following Energy Bill.
