Qantas to Remove Domestic Boarding Pass Printing from Kiosks

Like me. Not so much collected as retained in case of need to follow up claiming points etc. But I do value my old Ansett BPs.

A physical international BP once helped me get a government grant when it proved I took a flight I claimed 😊
Of course, the only thing is when they start to fade (depending on what they print them on....)
 
A nice little anecdote from another forum of the mess Qantas has made for people visiting Australia for the first time:

The issue I had was when I was going from SYD to Uluru, I tried to checkin at the business class counter, but they told me to do my luggage myself. OK, I had checked in online the night before, so I get the luggage tag, but there is no boarding pass. I tried to get a boarding pass, but the agent told me to use my phone. OK, I had a screenshot on my phone from the boarding pass. So...... the flight attendant wouldn't accept a screenshot when I boarded, said it had to be the Qantas app. I could never get the Qantas app to install. I walked down the bridgeway to get them to print out a boarding pass. Be sure to always have a printed boarding pass. I wouldn't trust the app and you could be denied boarding.
 
Is the check-in counter service completely gone from domestic now? If I want to ask about changing to an earlier flight do I have to wait until I get to the lounge?
 
Not been on a flight for a few years, booked QF in J CNS to SYD next month, so what is the booking procedure these days?, and is priority check-in out the window?

not sure what aspect of the booking procedure you're querying?
There are normally domestic checkin desks including priority ones marked 'international connections' where I've normally checked in domestic and got a cardboard boarding pass and never been sent away. If carry on only, checkin at the lounge is still a thing, and they've been happy to give me cardboard boarding passes too.
 
All airports still have check in desks still.. but not that many (or not as many as prior) are staffed, but one can still check in at a J counter. specially in CNS. One may need to join a fair queue though....

There are check-in counters still at all major airports but there is always someone to check either a) you are eligible due to status etc. or b) there is a genuine need to see a check-in staff (e.g. oversized bags) before they let you through.

I have no issues getting a boarding pass printed at the check-in counters and always no questions asked (I tell them I was having trouble getting the mobile boarding pass on the app).
 
Sounds to me like professing to not having a phone is the right move. No funky check-in can be expected if you don't have a phone !

In fairness, is it reasonable to expect as much service from Qantas at an outstation airport like Sydney? Perhaps if it was one of their major hubs like LAX that would be on thing!

This has not been my experience at all. I flew QF last month from NTL to HVB and they dealt with the whole checking a bag bit and providing me with a cardstock boarding pass. Looking further back to the last time I flew QF ex-SYD (have mainly been flying QF's luxury brand JétStar over the past couple of months), to LDH they provided a paper boarding pass and dealt with my checked bag.

As for self-service bag check, I frankly don't mind it one bit. If it means having to avoid the queues and head straight for the lounge, I'm all for it. That being said, the issue is when it's more than simply an option.

I doubt the boarding pass was made out of cardboard, that would make one heck of a thick boarding pass, certainly not something that would fit in your pocket. I think they use cardstock for boarding passes issued at the desk and newsprint for the cough that comes out of the kiosk.

And there are some circumstances where kiosks cannot be used, such as check-in when traveling with a service animal, which requires a person (check-in agent) to verify the service animal and handler credentials for authorised public access during the check-in process.

I meant, to walk up to a J front desk to check in.
 
For Shiz and Giggles I checked out the kiosk situation in OOL the other day. QF have disabled the check in and other functionality (ie: change seats, print BP etc) from the portal these kiosks use - so basically they only do bag tags now to match the new setup. A bit disappointing but hardly a surprise.
 
First time flying QANTAS in a long time, and I was stunned to be told that I needed to wait behind people checking in bags simply to receive my boarding pass... just because I don't use a smartphone!

The QANTAS employee said it changed post-COVID, but surely it's not that hard to give people the option of printing a paper boarding pass at the airport from a self-service kiosk.

I know, I know, I should "get with the times", apparently. Or I could print the boarding pass myself - which I do for outbound flights, but not for inbound flights because I don't have access to a printer - generally - while away.

For what it's worth, I use a Nokia 5710 to avoid distractions.
