Hi.

Looking to go to Bangkok 2nd July for a couple of weeks. Will be using my Sin-Per-Sin that i perpetually have, so am thinking of a budget airline to get from SIN-BKK.

I've never been on one before so am looking to find out whether the transfer from QF to 3K or FD (air asai?) is painful/painless and minimum connection times recommended by people who have done it. I'm not into running for planes, and I am arriving on QF77 at 1715.

Right now I am considering 3K 513 @ 1910 for 162SGD
or FD3506 @ 2040 for 58SGD

From what I can gather, Jetstar International is a more painless transfer but 3K and FD would require baggage collection, immigration, transfer to budget terminal (how is this accomplished) and then re-check in to budget airline.

Any advice? Or anyone recommend another airline?

Thanks

As far as I was aware, Air Asia operated out of Terminal 1 alongside Qantas and Jetstar, so I am not sure that there is a terminal transfer issue to deal with.

Some things to consider:
Make sure you have at least 2hrs pref. 2.5 hrs between flights in case of delays from PER. THEY WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU.
3K closes check in 40 minutes before flight time.
3K is in T1 so basically collect luggage and go up escalators to check in counter
I have done it a few times with best turn around back into air-side of about 45 minutes, all depends on immigration lines.
Dunno about Air Asia but 3K is a good service using similar A320 that JQ uses here.
If you are WP you will get lounge access in J lounge in SIN but no boarding call.
SIN-BKK can be quite full at times so paying extra $20 to snag a row 1 seat if good or buying Jet Flex gets you better seat selection. I have seen that you can purchase better seats at SIN or sometimes even on board.
Food and drink prices on board quite reasonable for budget airline.
I always go row 1, not for legroom as you get none but for ease of getting off first and no one in front.

Good luck.

Agree with taswegian77 for the most part, but a couple of points with regard to 3K:

If you don’t have checked baggage to collect you can check in at the boarding gate without having to pass through immigration.

The storage bins above the first few rows are reserved for “crew equipment only” which may negate the benefit of sitting in row 1.

True - but some of the bins are only half used (the sticker is usually on one side of the bin). Also, row 1 and 2 are typically called to board first, which helps in finding somewhere to put any carryon.

Your question on QF to 3K transfer is already answered in this thread response (copied below as well).

QF will interline your baggage through to your JQ International flight (see Question 11) <snip>.

If your flights are not booked on the same itinerary - when checking in for QF5 you must ask them to interline & through-check to your Jetstar flight. Make sure to present a copy of your Jetstar booking to hand so they can make this happen.

When completed, your bags will be checked all the way through to your destination and you will receive boarding passes for both the QF and JQ (3K/VF) flights.

Summary

full interline is available when transferring from a QF International to a 3K International flight. No need to collect bags and re-check, as they can be checked through to final destination as well as boarding passes provided for your 3K flight.

Make sure that if your flights are not booked on the same itinerary - when checking in for QF77 you must ask them to interline & through-check to your Jetstar flight. Make sure to present a copy of your Jetstar booking to hand so they can make this happen.

Once in SIN, you can proceed directly to your 3K gate, or spend some time in an airline lounge you have access.

Transfers at SIN between T1-3

Departures & arrivals aren't separated at SIN, so the whole airside area of the airport is one massive transit mall. If you have a long connection, you can easily explore the airside areas of T2 & T3 using the airside skytrain. T3 is a recommended stop, specially from an architectural point of view.

If you're still considering flying Air Asia from SIN...

If you're still considering going QF to Air Asia, this will be time consuming as you'll have to clear customs and collect bags at SIN T1, then proceed back to T1 Departures to check in.

Factoring in these items, QF to Air Asia could easily require 30-45min transfer time, so make sure to plan accordingly if choosing this option.
