Qantas to fly to Delhi from Sydney & Melbourne

Re claimed 'range' issues, Air India used to fly 'express' from MEL to DEL, albeit with a B788 IIRC.
The range issue is only for the 330s, MEL/SYD-DEL are 20% shorter than MEL-LAX and almost 30% shorter than PER-LHR, which are both within the range of the 789’s.

It's a long flight, I think while the transit restrictions are unknown and relatively complex, Qantas can make point to point routes work that couldn't pre-covid.

Yes but we were talking about 789’s. They are making it work with the 332 - with 240 y seats. Can they make it work with a more premium heavy aircraft?

If they could do BKK and HNL, surely it wouldn't be too hard to also put them on DEL?
I'm not saying it can't be done. But it's not just becuae Qantas is in there, that It means JQ could just take over.
JQ would need to set up an entirely new operation there, source suppliers, IT, etc. It's really not just a situation where QF gives everything to JQ. It's a separately run buniess ultimately.

Any idea what lounge Qantas is going to use in Delhi? And I presume the Darwin transit lounge that is used for the London flights will also be opened for these Delhi flights?

Plaza Premium?
I haven’t been through DEL for a while so I don’t even know what lounges they have there anymore. I can’t recall a lot of options when we were there

Maybe some overlap with the 90 min earlier EK flight for early arrivers for the SYD flight with the EK lounge if it is open, and access is still possible? Otherwise from memory there are a couple of pay lounge - plaza premium as you mention which is tucked away and then another pay lounge as well which is less tucked away (MH used this second one when I was there).

Cripes, Pushka got it from the news first.
Thought I was dreaming, not that I would go and visit India either, but a lot of Indians with Aust citizenship do go back for visits, so on some days, it would suit these travellers.
Just checked the QF website, still routes via SYD - BKK with QF, and then TG from BKK to DEL, on Wednesdays.

Checking on ABC website around 11am and Marshall did an interview from Adelaide airport and Qantas announced it then. Was excited thinking it would be Singapore. But not so.

By the looks of it, if you have a look at it, on the 11 Jan, ADL - DEL leaves at 8.15am, a bit early for a MEL - ADL flight, but if you put in a search on the QF website, MEL - DEL, it routes you via SYD.
And that is the direct flight option.
Not sure where that 330 is coming from on that 11 Jan Tuesday morning, maybe its a flight from the east coast that will fly to ADL the night before with freight only, who knows.
I used the former immi on flights to NZ, but have not tried the new downstairs immi processing at ADL airport, so maybe, with it being wider, international flights from ADL would be better now, outgoing immi wise.
By the looks of it, its wider too, with more immi counters, and also more international screening walkthrough scanners, and more wider zigzag bunting.
They still then marshall people upstairs to the closed off domestic gates though.
Not sure either if that international lounge is ready for pay per use entry, the one that SQ gave up on, that zone probably has gotten torn up for the new immi processing zone.

Ah, that could be the one, instead of MEL - ADL - DEL, as the first dom flight from MEL to ADL dep at 7:35am, arr ADL 8.25am.
Edit: looks like the SYD - ADL flight to link to that ADL - DEL flight is a domestic, the night before too.
So no "dom pax on an int flight" option, or orange stuck onto quasi int BP option.

If SQ prices their fares cheaper, this QF ADL - DEL linkage flight won't last too long, probably shorter than envisaged.
Some will go with fares only, the lower the fares, that is the one they will go for, or fly with.
The flight might only be good for Aussie exports to that part of Asia, seeing that its direct to DEL SQ still has to stop in SIN, and EK not flying to ADL, QR still has to go via DOH.
