Qantas 'surprise after the election'

The interesting possibility is that if Kevin Rudd pulls off an electoral win what are QF going to do then?

It may well be that they don't want whatever they announce to be part of an election campaign as opposed to they are waiting for a change of government. I can easily imagine Barnaby Joyce or Bob Katter going off their rockers as much as anyone on the Labor side if Qantas were moving activities off-shore. Tony Abbott has a bit of track record of making policy on the fly and telling people what they want to hear (as do plenty on the other side) so if everyone's in campaign mode -- regardless of their politics -- you could easily see them playing one-upmanship if the polls say it's popular. Regardless of who forms the next government any announcement is likely to get a much more sober reaction when not in campaign mode.

I think this could be a possibility. I created a poll on what people thought the "The Qantas Surprise" will be, as a new thread, and this was one of the options, but the Mods deleted the poll for some reason without the courtesy of advising me why. Very odd way to behave! Other options were leasing 777s and the dreaded "enhancement' to QFF. I think we are all hoping it will NOT be that last option!

Attention Mods, I am still waiting for and would still appreciate an explanation as to why my poll referenced above was deleted.

If I don't know the reason for it being deleted how can I be sure not to repeat similar mistakes in the future?

Moving to a new Sydney airport is an interesting possibility. Iirc Sydney airport has actually asked qantas to give up their T3 lease early and to substantial hand over facilities for the airport plan to combine domestic and international operations in the same terminal based on the operating carrier/alliance. Perhaps qantas have decided they don't like the deal and its better for them to move out completely?

Its not deleted but not accessible either, have asked support/admin to look into it.

I don't see how that could be connected to an election in any way though.

I don't see how almost ANY "Qantas surprise announcement" of note could be connected to the federal election, even a QF 787 announcement. I think Ben Sandilands is just trolling for traffic or had this little bit of QF gossip and didn't know what to do with it, decided to tack it onto the end of whatever anti-QF story he was writing on the day.

I am investigating. The Poll thread is not visible to me either

Perhaps some new routes? The Malaysian rumour mill has been generating some hype about a QF return to Kuala Lumpur: Cost of KLIA2 capped at RM4bil - Business News | The Star Online

I don't see how that could be connected to an election in any way though.

I notice the article says "There are also talks that Qantas Airways and British Airways may also return to KLIA.".
When did QF last fly to KUL on their own metal? I can't even recall a codeshare or QF flight number, but then my air travel awareness probably doesn't go as far back as far as many persons on here does!

The Kangaroo Route used to go through KL.

It's hard to picture how it's tied up to the election unless:

- they are anticipating a particular side to win and have a provisional agreement with one side or the other
- there's something tied to CBR??
- they are just waiting until after the election to get better media coverage

Of course, it could all be garbage or coincidental timing. Perhaps BS has done the maths where 2+2=45342355

perhaps now QFs main "Australian " competitor is > 70% foreign owned there will be a change to the 50% foreign holding cap currently in place

This would be my guess too.Foreign ownership could turn into an election issue.Probably also announcing EK to take a stake which again would have the hounds baying.

Why would they deliberately destroy brand goodwill in the most profitable flying part of their business? The stampede of QFF members to VA if that happened would then kill off the other profitable part of their business (QFF).

An enhancement. Because you're the reason we fly.

Possibly Olivia Wirth back to Government Relations and Corporate affairs or even a bigger promotion for Olivia Wirth post election, seems a strange rumour though, as I would imagine that whomever wins the federal election couldn't really be a game changer for the direction of QF.....

If that was true, then no pollie would ever be issued CL membership.
