As a result of last year's DSC promotion I took four international trips with Qantas in order to qualify as Platinum this membership year. This included a status run in business class to New Zealand and booking the other three trips - to Europe and the US - in a higher economy fare bucket (Saver instead of Sale, as the DSC offer required at least a Saver fare to qualify).

If not for the DSC offer I would only have taken two or three trips at the lowest possible price, so possibly not with Qantas at all as Qantas is rarely price-competitive. So as a result of the DSC promotion I spent thousands of dollars more with Qantas than I would have without the offer. I also burned about 260,000 points in upgrades that I would not normally have been able to (as you can't upgrade from a Sale fare), thereby wiping some liabilities off Qantas's balance sheet and filling some otherwise empty J seats.

I understand the argument that DSCs cause congestion in the lounges (although I've found that in case of the SYD-JFK flights there's not really enough transit time in Los Angeles to take advantage of the lounge there). I even get that some consider people who use DSCs to hit a tier as somehow less deserving than those who earn it "honestly" (by getting their employer to pay in most cases).

But all I can say is that if Qantas come through with another DSC offer in the next couple of weeks I'll book another two or three overseas trips with them, while willingly paying a reasonable premium. If I do not get a DSC offer I'll look more broadly for cheap fares.

PS - A 50% SC offer is unlikely to be appealing for me as I don't think I'd be able to retain Platinum by its use given my current travel plans and budget.

In an almost identical position. If a DSC offer comes through in the next week and a half, I'll book a few trips with Qantas to requalify for Platinum. If an offer doesn't come through, I won't requalify so will spend the rest of my member year flying with other oneworld airlines where I will be able to use all the benefits of Platinum for a lower airfare cost (and no revenue to Qantas).

My sentiments exactly !! I've got 3 Intl Y trips to be booked for this year. All to India, looking at complex routing to increase SC earn. With DSC, I'd retain Platinum by mid-year

Fingers crossed :)

If the I50LK fare basis comes back you may want to look at ex CMB QF business. Would work well with back-to-back trips if you already know your dates. Some very good value and interesting routing options to east coast Australia, and NZ. QF coded flights would also be eligible for targeted 50% SC bonus in the event a DSC doesn't come around.

Thanks @sbor90, I will look into MATRIX ITA for the fares and update this thread

I50LK isn't published at the moment - it tends to come and go.

I realized ... the cheapest I could was around A$2900 - A$3300 :(
Um 2900 isnt that bad price if all QF ticketed flights CMB-SIN-MEL-AKL rtn in I class incl taxes....where you price up?

A$2900 is cheap, but for the dates I'm after the price shoots upto A$3900 ... and with me doing 3 trips, that's going to be at-least A$11000 of personal money :)

I'm working to see if I can change my travel dates - most of these dates are sort-of-set-in-stone dates ... but let me see !!

$2900 would likely be D class. The I class fares are usually closer to ~$2500 inc taxes.

Is there any way other than Matrix ITA to search for I class fares? I read on FT that one could try momondo.

any other suggestions ?

Looking for a quick trip to make use of the 50% SC offer in next 2 weeks. Best I can find is PER-BNE/SYD/MEL-NOU for just under 2000. Flying solo so can't get the 1998 NZ deals. Don't want to risk heading north so guess NOU is it, but after this cyclone moves on

Hey guys, just a few days ago I got a 50% bonus status credit, thinking to do a run to AKL or CHC in business.
I read in the post before that Sale ticket class does not get the bonus. Is this true? The website directs me to an 'Airline Earning Table', which is fine. But just wondering if there is a specific rule to the bonus status credit.
Thanks so much.

All fare classes are eligible for the 50% bonus. That clause only existed in one DSC promotion a few years ago IIRC.

The post was the second post on this page.

If you are referring to Jean Prouvaire's post, I think they were talking about Sale fares not being upgradable using points rather than eligibility for bonus SC.

In any case a sale fare is certainly eligible.

While I was indeed talking about upgrade eligibility in my post, the personalised DSC offer I took advantage of explicitly did not apply to sale fares. Only saver fares and up were eligible for DSCs. The offer also only applied to international flights, not domestic. The DSC offer was well-targeted in my case, as it incented me to spend more money with Qantas then I otherwise would have.
