Qantas starts international wifi

Not sure if that soon.
Albeit the first batch of 4 789s (along with the 8 78X and 12 regular 35Ks) was due to arrive in FY27 (so by June 2027) but Qantas is yet to be allocated any production slots on the 787 build sheets.
Isn't the timeline dictated by the 333 maintenance requirements not 787 arrival. I can't see Qantas putting those frames through another check.

Yes. But equally I hope QF hasnt misplanned orders to leave a fleet gap.

332 VH-EBB tonight returning from a 7wk check at QPG (EBA recently had similar).
The first 4 332s came roughly a year ahead of the first 6 333s.

Of course who knows how Covid shutdowns altered the maintenance schedule. From memory the 332s came back first.. but would be disappointing if QPA-QPD fly for longer without Wifi Internet.

ET article on Qantas Wifi

- Viasat 3 Asia satellite (F3) expected to be operational be September 2026
- Entire international fleet to be completed early-mid 2027 (or within nine months)
- possible suggestion the A380s will be done locally rather than in the Middle East (assuming OQI returns soon)
- no suggestion that QPA-QPD won't have Wifi installed (noting reported crew comments above)
- unclear if all aircraft includes the Finnair lease (QPK, QPL) or purchase QPM.

737 halfway between Australia and New Zealand. I feel it's way faster than when it first launched (esp. Upload), did Viasat reconfigure their beams over this area or something? It's actually way faster than nbn Skymuster generally is when over Australia..

Either that or I'm lucky and nobody on this flight is using the WiFi.

Nope it’s always snappy over the Tasman. The Viasat network is actually really fast and so once all sats are up and working performance should be quite good.

As for domestic Australia I suspect they’re not buying enough bandwidth from the NBN to keep up. Long term as NBN moves away from skymuster and to Amazon we could see QF switch domestic to Viasat network and whilst everything is pure speculation I think cost will keep domestic on skymuster as long as possible.

^ and that would likely still be on some temporary old generation Viasat satellites (I suspect the acquired Inmarsat GX series, now renamed as Inmarsat-5)a

Report on airliners.net that QantasLink (Network) A320 VH-UVT has received a Wifi hump.
Didnt have that on my bingo card.

And with A380 VH-OQI returning with a jump, and VH-OQJ on its way to DRS for maintenance, who knows when the A380 program will start.

Mentioned here, I think:

QantasLink’s West Australian airline Network Aviation will begin fitting its fleet of 28 Airbus A320 and A319 aircraft with onboard Wi-Fi so customers can keep connected in the sky and enjoy the latest hit movies and television shows on their own device via the Qantas Entertainment App.

WOW. Never thought this would happen. After some searching, managed to find this, from a tiktok video at the Perth outdoor viewing area 2 days ago.

It also aligns with its recent 11-day maintenance gap between July 2nd and July 13th.
