Qantas snubs Territory

September 24, 2006 12:00am

GOING by her tantrum at Sydney Airport on Friday, supermodel Naomi Campbell will not fly Qantas again.

She should be so lucky. If she visited the capital city of the Territory, the Queen of the Catwalk would find that she could not use Queensland and Northern Territory Air Services to an increasing number of Australian destinations.

The choice, if that is what you call it, is between Qantas' budget offshoot, Jetstar, and Virgin. So the Ms Campbells of this world can forget business class, first class and even what used to be economy class.

The Territory is now a budget destination. Visitors and Territorians alike have no choice but to buckle up, or buckle under, and cop the lowest class of air services in the country.

And if Ms Campbell wanted to escape Australia altogether from what was once the nation's front door for international air traffic, she had better be quick.

Australia's national airline will no longer fly the historic Darwin-Singapore route after October 29. Jetstar and another budget carrier, Tiger, have that route. Luckily, Royal Brunei is sticking with its international flights out of the Territory, so at least we have more choice of transport to Asian destinations than we do to some of our own capital cities.

And of course, if Ms Campbell or any other Qantas critics found themselves in the Territory's regional centres, such as Katherine or Tennant Creek, they would find no regular air services at all.

<...snip...>

As Jetstar takes over more routes, the rumour mill in Central Australia has it that Qantas will close its Alice Springs office, as part of its withdrawal from the Territory.

The Chief Minister is on record as having "divided thoughts" about the loss of the Qantas brand on the Darwin-Singapore route.

If Qantas does move out of Alice Springs, maybe, just maybe, the Martin Government will at least insist that Qantas takes "NT" out of its billion-dollar name.

Does anyone know if PER-DRW, DRW-ADL will be operated by J* or QF? Is QF pulling all QF flights from DRW?

I am really looking forward to the day I have to fly Jetstar. :(

Is the Ghan still operating?

My goodness, the prices for train travel ADL to DRW are something to behold. It is just an old rattler but they price it like a bullet train. At this stage I think QF still fly ADL to DRW with a connection to SIN.

It's sad that they are just slashing all their less-than-major routes, doesn't project the image of a healthy company at all. VB must be rubbing their hands; I won't be flying deathstar if I can help it any way.

I think its a bit overdramatic calling Virgin and Jetstar the lowest class of air services...

I wouldn't rate Royal Brunai in my top 20 to be honest either and I'll wait to try Jetstar International before I make the call on that.

Qantas still fly Syd-Darwin-Mumbai, but only 3 times a week and those flights do not stop in Darwin at all on the return legs!

What was Naomi Cambell's tanty about?

PER-DRW has a daily Qantas and a daily QantasLink flight (via ASP).

I would be a bit surprised to see PER-DRW replaced by JetStar any time soon. To do that they would likely have to set up a staff base here, and I don't recall hearing anything about that.

Thanks guys.. Hopefully they'll keep QF on those routes. I'm flying PER-DRW-ADL in April next year.

I agree..Although I think QF s trying to 'convert' their current high cost airline into a low cost airline. I'm wondering if after a few years, perhaps once the new aircraft start arriving, whether we'll see a new business class product introduced on J*.

Nasty Naomi jets in, lets fly

September 23, 2006 12:00
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

AS yet another personal assistant emerged with allegations of being assaulted by supermodel Naomi Campbell this week, the hot-tempered diva king-hit her first Australian victim within minutes of landing in Sydney yesterday _ Qantas. ...

... With a Qantas flight attendant trailing her with her luggage trolley, Campbell bizarrely remarked: "F... off'' and "I am never flying Qantas again.''

Qantas yesterday confirmed Campbell had flown from Bangkok on QF2 but said the flight was without incident. ...

... It seems Campbell was under the impression Qantas had tipped the media off to her arrival.

She was wrong - The Daily Telegraph was at the terminal for another story when a passenger on Campbell's flight told us she was about to emerge from the arrivals gates.

Assuming both the "her" in the quote above refer to Naomi, I'm wondering how I get the FA to push my luggage trolley.

Hmm, maybe become a supermodel, abeit a slightly testy one?

Why is that I wonder? My reasoning is that they refuel up in Darwin for the return to Sydney rather than having to do so in Mumbai. With only three flights a week (and they turnaround in about 2hrs in Mumbai), there's probably no point in signing up any deals on fuel etc..just a quick clean and a safety check with the local contractors..

I can assure you those aircraft depart BOM with full tanks.

No, it's more simple than that ...

SYD-BOM there's generally strong head winds encountered at around the normal cruising height of aircraft... conversely BOM-SYD there's generally strong tail winds.

These winds are commonly call the "Jet Stream" and can often reach 400Kmh (250MPH).

I'm rather upset about QF pulling out of DRW - SIN. I'm flying to Europe next year from DRW and planned to fly DRW - SIN - LHR with Qantas.

However with Jetstar taking over I must fly to SIN and collect my luggage, clear customs, and then recheck in on Qantas. I read something about QF codeshare passengers would be able to get bags checked to their destination and would be able to stay airside - however when I asked QF they said this would not happen.

He offered me DRW - PER - SIN - LHR. It's only 10 hours longer.

It was certainly my understanding that there was baggage connectivity between QF International flights and JQ International flights.

Perhaps being operated by Jetstar Asia that may not apply to DRW-SIN.

Last time I checked you can't make a booking from DRW to LHR online with QF (must make two bookings).

You might like to check again. The QF web site is offering the routing using QF355 DRW-SIN connecting to QF9 for SIN-LHR for the random date of 1st November that I checked.

QD355 is the QF codeshare on the JQ flight for DRW-SIN. Passengers using the QF codeshare flight number receive meals, IFE headphones, FF points and status credits, and baggage interlining with other QF and partner airlines.

Is that the same on the Jetstar Asia operated services though? "Asia" offer a similar service to that of JQ Domestic so I'm not sure how they'd organise the free meals, although I guess a set of headphones wouldn't be too hard for them to figure out.

Best to refer to the press release: http://www.jetstar.com/pdf/news/20060915.pdf

Pertinent points are:

The flights will be operated by Jetstar Asia for and on behalf of Jetstar under the Jetstar brand.

..

The new Jetstar international services will offer Qantas Codeshare customers a ground and inflight product that includes through passenger check-in and baggage interlining to Qantas domestic and international flights, a complimentary hot meal and full bar service.

..

"Baggage connectivity and passenger through check-in will importantly be available for customers connecting from this Jetstar service to Qantas domestic and international flights in addition to other Jetstar international flights.

Yes. If you purchase the QF flight number, you get the QF services.

The "operated by JetStar Asia" is just like an "operated by Jet Connect" os similar tag. The flight is a Jetstar (JQ) flight with a Qantas (QF) codeshare. It just happens that they will be using a JetStar Asia aircraft and crew. It will not be a Jetstar Asia flight and will not carry a Jetstar Asia 3K flight number.
