Qantas scraps child fares for domestic fares.

Apparently, the change was picked up on social media. Does this indicate that QF are now not announcing changes but just letting them filter down?

I know that this brings them into line with VA but when it comes to taking from kids, you've got to wonder how low they can go.

(Note: I have edited my avatar to suit)

A child fare is a red-e fare isn't it?

Which is fine if there are always a couple of Red-e seats available.

It is poor form and I think the trickle down info is also lousy. But then look at Red Roos hopeless situation on posting the changes to the FF scheme. 100K dislikes.

Back in the 90's, a child fare was av discount on a normal fare - maybe 70% of an adult fare (perhaps less).

With the advent of red e-deals there was no provision for such child discounts however they still existed for other fares, including business/ first fares.

I went to the Qantas Industry Sales site and no mention of it there. Edit: Wrong. See Princess Fiona's post below.

So when does this apply? Now?

Geez, just how low can Qantas slink? Thanks for the 'heads up' Red Roo! We know you are always hopping around here with the good news!

This isn't a particularly recent move is it? If that is the case, why would RedRoo give us a heads up?

It happened today, I would suggest that's recent.

Hold on a second - the fare I purchased for my young one (had to be a child fare for the seat) was effectively no different to a red e deal price wise, and this is going back a number of months.

Like others are saying, there isn't much different here compared to what they have experienced previously.

Red e deals have not been discounted for children for a number of years, all the other fares have, see this Q card for the situation a few years back:

Now there are not discounts regardless if it being flexi, business etc.

This is the latest Dom Fare Structure from Qantas which appears to confirm the tweet

The pricing card quoted by Princes Fiona is dated (in the file name) 24th April 2014. So I reckon that's pretty recent.

And no matter what date, we know Red Roo is always on the case giving us the good news. Maybe Red Roo will solicit questions about these changes and the winners will be invited to a lunch hosted by Lesley to explain the situation? ;)

Edit. These changes definitely come under the slogan "Simpler". "Fairer" might be a tougher ask, but I'm sure Qantas can come up with that one too.

Last time I was in Qantas business with the children, the FA wanted to bring the kids a Y meal so that other J passengers (most likely staff) could have the Salmon salad. One child loves salmon so this was rather annoying. But at least now if the kids are pay full rate then no problems demanding the J meal.

back in the 80s it was 50% of the full F fare :)

then as a high school student, also 50% of the full F fare.

then at uni it was 25% off, but only economy.

I still maintain that nothing has changed for Domestic Economy fares - as Serfty has suggested, Child Fare doesn't entail a discount domestically in economy.

P.s - Get of Red Roo's case.

I think you need to re-read. Nothing has changed for red-e-deals. But other domestic economy fares did entail a child discount. It is wrong to claim this hasn't changed. Maintain whatever you wish, it is still wrong.

If that is the case, I stand corrected.

How many flyers would book flexi fares for Children out of interest?

I mostly recall having a discount when booking for my children. But this confuses me because I would have mostly booked the cheapest fares.

So your kid is going to have to pay 20% more to sit in Business Class or hold a fare that needs to be flexible for some remote reason. And that is if you have that kind of money to disburse for such privileges for an individual under 12 years of age.

Big deal IMO really. Take that, Master W Fysh II.......
