Just booked a return trip from SYD-MAL via KL flying in J with Malaysian Airlines. I called up Qantas prior to making the booking to see how many SC I'll be getting for the trip and was told 140 each way.

Just tried out the new Qantas point calculator, now that you can calculate OW flights with it and realised that SYD-KUL in J only earn me 60 SC while KUL-MAL, even though at half the flying time of just 4 hours, earns 80 SC.

Not sure how Qantas comes up with that, especially when you compare a similar route, SYD-SIN flying in J with Qantas earns 120 SC one way!

simple.

Because East Coast Australia (SYD, MEL, BNE) to Asia (China/HK/Malaysia/Japan/Singapore/SriLanka/Thailand)

earns 60 SC on a partner
but 120 SC on QF code.
(and similarly half SCs in other fare classes)

Whereas on an Asia to Asia route, QF doesn't compete, and it is based on a more normal distance bucket.

---

Same as you take QF J SYD-LHR you would get 280 SCs but via MH, JL, CX, BA only 140 SCs

I was looking at a trip to MLE via HKG and noticed that the HKG-MLE earned reasonably well even though it was with a partner.

I think its horrid that QF only allows QFF members, flying dis Y on MH, an earn rate for FF of 883 points, and about 20 EDIT: 15 (!!!) SC for the one way flight from Au to KUL.
Maybe I would fly VA codeshare with SQ from SYD to SIN to MLE, if I were in the OP's shoes.
Might sound as a gripe, and threadjack (apolosies), but only 15 SC to fly that distance!
Ugh.
I will leave this post in peace now.

Note if you're actually flying discount fares on MH
(like most of them at the moment which book into N,O,Q classes)

You won't earn ANY points or SCs on QFF
You also won't earn on AA Advantage.

I must be confused.

I vaguely remember when MH joined Oneworld flights such as SYD-KUL did not earn on QFF. Was that economy only?

Have you checked how many FF points an enrich member earns between SYD-KUL on disc. Y flying on MH.

Your lower fare buckets don't earn very much as an Enrich member on MH as it is.

You earn in fare classes K/M/L/V/B/H/Y/C/D/J/Z/A/F, though the number of points earned differ depending on the destination pairs.
