Qantas RM Williams Business Amenity Kits

Most here travelling to Europe would have two near consecutive flights. There’ll be an amenity kit on each flight. I usually leave the second one behind - not because I don’t appreciate it but because I’ve just got one.

Personally, I am completely unmoved by any brand name in an amenity kit or just about any other aspect of life. All it means is an extra cost in paying for the brand label (passed on to customers in one way or another) and the product itself is probably made in China right alongside the unbranded version.

I like the new RM Williams Qantas kit but only for the pouch itself..

I don’t know whether the airline does pay for it? I’d always assumed the company involved gave their product for free, for marketing purposes? Unless they went out to tender?

A couple of possible scenarios, amongst others.

Qantas goes to RM Williams and says ‘hey do you want to put your merchandise and brand in front of our premium passengers? Supply X000 amenity kit pouches and you’ll get great exposure.’

Qantas thinks: ‘we’ve got to supply these amenity kits. How can we make them look more attractive? Ah ha - let’s approach RM Williams to see if they’ll put their label on them.

There are companies that negotiate the deals between the airlines and brands, for example BUZZ in Melbourne. Usually the airlines will go to them saying we are looking for x, y and z and the amenity company will find a brand and negotiate for the use of the brand name. Usually the brand doesn't produce or provide anything other than the use of their brand. Instead these specialist companies produce the kits. Full kits often cost less than $2 to produce.

Why would you assume the price will subsequently taken into account?

So you can always go ‘on demand’. As the article says, amenity kits are a nice souvenir for irregular flyers. And some of them come with good products!

Irregular flyer present ✋. On demand kits sound like a great solution.

When I flew Fiji Airways business overnight last year (first business experience) I was looking forward to one for a souvenir but once onboard found out they have stopped offering them. Surprising having read an article from December 2024 about Fiji's brand new amenity kits! The rest of the experience (seat, meals, service, etc) was amazing, especially for someone who usually flies economy like me.

I haven’t done two hop QF flights to/from Oz / Euro for a while but I have noticed that some airlines have different amenities on their true longhaul flights compared to their shorter flights. eg QR from Oz / Asia to/from DOH are bigger/nicer and the Euro hops are the smaller ones. So you’re inclined to take both because they’re different! 😀

OT, but I usually try and grab the QR PJs because the newer ones have pockets in the pants (and quite handy to wear around the house or on other airlines! 😉).
