Just checked the Qantas website to book a one-way flight for my cousin from SYD to MEL on Monday. Despite advertising $98 on the main Red e-deal page, when the availability came up, the flights were priced at $65 each. There is MASSIVE availability (with nearly every flight coming up at $65) so if anyone wants a quick trip to MEL, jump in and take advantage of this.

Only problem is that all red e-deals for the return flight back to SYD are totally non-existent. Still could provide a cheaper alternative to those who want to get away. :D

Virgin have had these on sale for $39. If you sign up for the Virgin or Qantas newsletter, you will usually get advance notice of any sales and get to book flights before the general public.

I have found this to be quite valuable, and have booked some cheap weekends away for next year!

Dexter, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the latest Virgin $39 sale only applies to travel from 13th January 2004. I didn't find anything (and I don't think anyone would have) on Virgin Blue any cheaper than $89 for travel THIS Monday coming (29th December) and that's why it was such a nice surprise to see QF on sale at $65 to MEL especially with the flight being in 4 days and still with plenty of availability.

Like you:
(a) I am signed up to both newsletters; and
(b) I have booked a number of nice getaways for the new year with QF. VB might have been cheapers but for me, when you have Qantas Club membership, a few extra dollars on top of VB's price to fly QF is definitely worth it. :D

Happy holidays :D

Correct Nick! Sorry, I didn't read your post properly (too much x-mas spirit!).

I have in the past week booked with both Qantas & Virgin. I have found most times that when it comes to the dates I choose to travel, that Qantas is actually cheaper than Virgin. Go figure.

Not a problem Dexter. You are excused at this time of year :D

I totally agree with you about the Virgin vs Qantas pricing. While Virgin may have the cheaper advertised price, the flights at these prices are usually at odd times (eg early in the morning or late at night) and are most likely during the week, which isn't often suitable for a weekend holiday or trip away. Qantas, while maybe $10 - $20 dearer, affords you much greater availability and flight times. not to mention FF points and a merry time in the Qantas Club.

Still, thanks to competition from VB, Qantas usually reduces their prices somewhat which is a good thing all round, no matter which airline you fly with. :D
