Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

With 8 doors on the A350-1000, 8 bunks would mean that each CC would have their own bunk - if there are 8 crew for Project Sunrise

Bunks would be shared as it will have more than 8 crew.

The pilots crew rest is a lot more custom and not the traditional A350 pilot rest area. The normal ones are not two private, completely controllable areas. This was probably done to keep CASA happy.

Err no, A579 is the route, not a waypoint, Jordy is a waypoint enroute in the YSSY FIR, TESAT is effectively overflying SYD VOR

@Quickstatus Re cabin crew. Their main function is safety, so presumably a full compliment is needed to be available 'on the floor' at all times (ie even if sitting behind a curtain)? So if there are X active positions, then maybe 1.5X total compliment, to allow 1/2 to rest at any one time? If so (IF), wonder where the non-active crew will be on take-off and landing?

On board and available not necessarily on floor. Though everyone would be on floor for takeoff and landing.

But yes I've heard up to 14 for PS which means 8 resting and 6 on the floor at non takeoff and landing phases

CASA 1CC per up to 36 pax up to 216 seat aircraft
And for wide bodies more than 216 seats 1 per floor level exit but no less than 1CC per separate passenger compartment. Overwing exits are not floor level exits

So a 737-800 should have 5 CC but there are CASA exemptions that allow 4

But that was 2004 legislation. I have not checked if there is newer legislation:

Is there a definition of 'carried'? Seems to a bit out of date for flights with significant crew rest periods. 'Carried' should be 'on duty' or 'not at rest'?

I don't necessarily think a crew in rest (maybe asleep) is 'available'. In case of sudden emergency, (great turbulence, some structural issue), could def be a delay in getting into the aisles and effective.

Presumably they came up with a number > 8 with CASA for project Sunrise. Unfortunately those arrangements appear to be secret.

If it is 14 as some have suggested, that would mean 6 on the floor (and 8 bunks)

"feed the chooks and turn off the lights" rinse and repeat x3

The emergencies at cruise phase would be
Medical - don't need all the crew at once
Fisticuffs - but aren't we talking premium passengers?

I think the only situation where all hands on deck would be required are
1)Actual fire
2) Severe turbulence where the proverbial hits the fan with injuries ala SQ
3)Feeding the chooks
4) take off and landing

According to discussion on SydSquad and the routing posted on FlightAware this aircraft will overfly both SYD and LAX heading eastbound for TLS. Looks like a 12,000nm flight, versus 9100nm for the westbound routing.

I posted upthread that I wouldn’t have been surprised if they went MEL-JFK - but that might have had Melbournians searching for more pearls to clutch!

Sounds like this is the circa 24hr long endurance flight test mentioned up thread?

Some social media speculation it is going via Japan and over Canada and arctic - the QF's other PS route?. But it is too far south for that. It should have headed north a long time ago.
