Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

they just couldn't do it could they ..spinning "a 15 per cent increase with no reduction in space between seats" as a good thing..

Did you miss the bit about it being 5m longer? I'm confused about what you're complaining about.

Those maps are a bit exciting, perhaps we will see some narrow routes ex-PER opening up. I wonder what happens to the 330s, perhaps the days of lie-flat transcon are soon to end.

AA have a specially configured A321 (A321T) for transcon flights with real F, lie flat J and a much smaller Y section. No reason why QF can't do something similar.

Surely from the angle of passenger comfort, more narrowbodies and fewer (or no) widebodied aircraft is regressive.

I vastly prefer the latter, especially when in the 1-2-1 business class (in favour) and 2-4-2 economy class (configuration out of favour compared to yukky 3-3-3) setups.

Nowhere in that press release did it say this is an A330 replacement. I heard heard they were looking the the future 797 for that - which would be about the time they'd want to retire the A330s.

We’re all armchair fleet planners here. The a330s are the oldest planes in the fleet, but very good at what they do, transcons and Asia. I was ever so slightly surprised that some a330neo purchases weren’t announced as part of the deal, some of those planes are pushing 20 years old.

They're not that old, certainly not the A330-200s - 12 are less than 10 years old. The youngest was delivered end of 2015.

Some of the a330-300s came in a batch from 2003-2005. Do 787 deliveries make up for those?

There are 737s older than the A330s, not to mention the 717s and the F100s.....

That was exactly my thought too- part of Airbus' pitch for the A321 on long haul has been exactly that, you can still put decent seats on there. And AA is proving exactly that- think of the soft product what you want, the hard product on the AA Transcon flights is fabulous in F and actually still really nice in J for a 5 to 6ish hour long flight.

Yeah I just noticed they listed the date they swapped between JQ and QF as the delivery date on that particular website, so that info was not correct.

Though I still stand by the statement that they are not that old - there are 737s that were older.

And the 767s were certainly much older when they finally retired, so there's a bit of life left in the A330s.

Does Qantas still have 737-MAX orders?

20 Business clss seats on the A321 is interesting. 8 more than on capital routes today - must be planning for new ways to monetise upgrades, or maybe they already can see how much demand there is. I rarely see an empty BC seat SYD-MEL on a 737 these days.
Seems like something similar to AA A321T but with with only Y and (lie-flat) J, with 10 additional J rather than the 10 F seats on the 321T. American Airlines Airbus A321 transcon Seating Chart - Updated May 2022 - SeatLink. Definitely premium-heavy.

But aim now in the SYD J and this has A220 has just pulled up outside Hangar 96.
I thought it's here again but not the same aircraft:

Domestic fleet replacement is all single aisled, so looks like in future no more twin aisled planes on domestic flights.
A350 only mentioned for their international fleet.

Nice catch! Definitely a rare sight in Sydney or even Australia for that matter to see such a livery.
ET saying that First suites don’t have windows. Anyone seen anything to differ?
If that's the case, that really sucks 😬 everything else looks pretty good though.

Surely the window seats will have, the middle ones obviously not

Here's what they actually said:
However, it’s not immediately clear if those long illuminated wall panels will actually be windows – through which guests can watch the ‘double sunrise’ for which Project Sunrise was named – and if so, how travellers in the middle suites will enjoy a similar view.

And as many have pointed out, the promo video was 2D, a middle seat.

I'm pretty certain there will be windows.

Whilst it's nice to see that AJ has actually ordered some aircraft, that, at this point at least, look like they'll go to mainline, it's worth noting that if he retires next year, he'll have been in the CEO chair for 15 years, and these are the very first aircraft that he has ordered for mainline QF.

Good to see he has managed to tick the last bucket list item before he exits the job :)

He managed to squeeze every last drop out of the 717/737/330 fleet while ensuring the 787s went to JQ first and thus maximising profits...
