Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

Not surprising when there are more seats to SYD than MEL. Also lots of pax then transfer to dom flights which is not a good welcome to Australia.
Chicken and egg?

More seats to/from SYD due to higher demand?

We’re not talking small numbers. That info graphic posted above (which I saw the whole article myself) mentioned almost 13mil for SYD and 7mil for MEL. That’s a massive delta that current and future VIC Governments ought to be helping to snare. Ditching the Commonwealth Games didn’t help.

By you logic flights to JNB should dep MEL as from SYD they do often overfly MEL

If MEL was the major hub, yeah. Not exclusively, MEL still has routes to the US, but having to hub through SYD is less of a pain if the ex-SYD flight is shorter. It does make MEL-JNB a contender if QF wanted to grow capacity into JNB, vs a second flight from SYD.

For LAX, QF could fly from SYD with the standard 747-400, it needed the 747-400ER to fly from MEL.

Thank you Finnair!
QF restarting flights MEL-LHR coincides with AY flying to MEL so QF clearly spooked by the compettion from an excellent airline. Also the restarting of BA's MEL-LHR service in January.
I wonder why the Qantas agent did not tell me this when I wrote and complained this week???.
