My understanding was it would only go on the AU - NZ routes, but that would be great if they flew to SIN & LAX

By design, the A351 is the “LR” variant. The “ULR” nomenclature is not an official Airbus variant. Currently, it’s unique to the QF aircraft, so not unreasonable to try and differentiate the two models.

I'm confused here. Did someone internally copy pasta from their old operating MO or is there something we're missing here?

‘We plan to base some of our new A350-1000ULRs (my bolding) in Melbourne which will let us fly to international destinations we can’t reach from there today. Qantas and Jetstar currently serve 17 international destinations out of Melbourne and that number is expected to grow’

So LR in the July press release, now ULR.

Qantas said the direct flight will begin in mid-2028 and would shave three hours off the typical journey from Sydney to New York.

Qantas has said its nonstop, ultra-long flights will boost profits for the Australian airline by about A$400mn (US$285mn), even with persistently higher jet fuel prices caused by the Iran war.

Chief executive Vanessa Hudson told the FT, “We’ve retested that business case and I think that some of the things that continue to make us confident about that number are that the demand for non-stop services continues to be incredibly strong.”

Translation: we're confident enough people will pay the high fares we intend to charge for these flights?
