PASSENGERS on a Qantas plane feared for their lives when an engine shutdown at 3000m on a flight from Horn Island to Cairns yesterday.
Almost 70 passengers and crew endured a terrifying flight onboard the crippled Dash 8 as it was diverted to Weipa to make an emergency landing.
After about 20 minutes the plane reached the Weipa strip where it landed and became stuck mid-runway.
Corey Bousen, who took photographs of the dead engine from his window seat on the right-side of the turbo-prop plane, told The Weekend Post of his struggle to stay calm after a crew member told passengers of the problem about 10 minutes into the flight.
He said the engine had accelerated rapidly for about a minute before the pilot performed an emergency shutdown.
A flight attendant said: "You may have noticed on engine is not working", Mr Bousen said. He said while the passengers appeared calm on the inside he was definitely thinking about the different possible outcomes - including a fiery end.
"I was not relaxed. I've done some flying and while I knew it could fly on one engine you do wonder about the inevitable if the other fails," he said.
As the plane limped to Weipa, Mr Bousen said passengers were kept informed by pilot Greg Moore.
On finally reaching Weipa about 12.20pm, the plane circled the airport while emergency crews positioned themselves and passengers prepared for the landing.
Mr Bousen praised Capt Moore for his skill in landing the crippled plane.
"The deceleration was dramatic.
"A book I had beside me flew forward off the seat next to me," he said. "It would have been a real pig to land that plane on one engine."
On landing, the plane failed to turn properly and became stuck on the runway near the terminal.
Mr Bousen's first thought on landing was "I need a beer".
A QantasLink spokeswoman said 22 passengers were put on to a replacement aircraft yesterday afternoon and that 34 passengers stayed overnight at Weipa and would leave today.
"QantasLink is currently assessing the aircraft," she said.
The incident follows another serious delay on the same route in a similar aircraft only a week ago.
Mr Bousen said his father had to wait seven hours to get aboard after that plane had suffered technical problems on arriving at Horn Island.
It is not known if it is the same aircraft.

I've got to go flying shortly so I must remember to start both engines so I don't have to endured a terrifying flight .
