Qantas petition to open state borders

I am not going near a QF aircraft, or any other, until flying is safe.

I flew SYD-BNK and then BNK-SYD with Qantas the week before last. On the outbound flight all staff and all passengers wore masks except 1 3yo and 1 adult. Ont he return flight crew and passengers all work masks again except 2 toddlers and 1 senior (which was weird since they are the risk category). I wiped my arm rests and tray table with wipes, didnt eat/dribk on the flight and felt quite safe. NSW community spready is very low, Byron has no active acses, safer than doing local super market shop.

I mostly agree. That is why I will not fly in the current circumstances.

But, if somebody else does and becomes infected from the flight they could transmit the virus to others who choose not to fly.

Happy to be corrected and better informed, but aren't we still waiting for a documented case where it has been proven an infection occurred on board?

There have been several I have seen where there was initial suspicion, but then proven to have occurred between flights/on land.

IIRC I did see one case in the media that was being investigated where I did not see the conclusion of the investigation.

Given the large amount of flying that is occurring in other parts of the world where the infection rate is much higher, I would have thought out of just pure chance we would have had dozens of documented cases by now if in fact flying was a serious threat.

Perhaps an AFFer who has been following much closer than I can provide some facts around it?

Currently I don't consider flying within Australia would be a high risk provided the planes are cleaned more thoroughly and each person takes responsibility for their own health by copious use of hand sanitiser and wearing a mask.

I do see increased risk in airports generally given the crowding that occurs in gate lounges and aerobridges and airport cafes if one doesn't take responsibility for their own health.

Well, the same principle can be applied in every setting where we are in any area where there are other people close by. And where air conditioning doesn’t have the same specs as planes.

On flights to/from Melbourne all passengers and crew are required to wear masks and for those flights over 2 hours, passengers and crew are also required to change their mask at the 2 hour mark.

All other flights, it is strongly recommend to wear a mask.

But QF desperately needs the borders to open to generate cash for refunds...
Not an excuse not to refund someone.

They owe me $3200 also, I'm not signing this until they refund me, which I've been waiting months for.

Have you rung recently? If more than 10 weeks, they will escalate but you must ring.

Oh and Of course we know masks don’t give completely surety...bus infection in Sydney after the CBD cluster.

Talk about clickbait!

I read the headline then the conclusion "Our findings do not rule out airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in an airplane cabin," they wrote.

Signed. Not planning to travel even if borders are open but I want DR FM to able to visit us when she starts working in Brisbane.

I still can't bring myself to sign the petition, even though I have finally been refunded my money. The reason - I just think Qantas treats its staff so poorly, have played a lot of games regarding refunds and I can't ethically support this I don't think for a second that AJ is worried about anyone's welfare, if he did, he would have refunded money to struggling people a lot earlier and accessed their debt facility to do it. And yes I know I am "punishing" the employees but as I do not that I think this survey will make any difference to the Premiers/CHO who are not budging it doesn't matter anyway.

It is really an ineffectual petition anyway. Very broad. Of course borders will be open when safe to do so. The interpretation of “safe” could mean anything from when there are no COVID-19 cases anywhere in Australia or when there is a vaccine, or just when it is thought the risk of transmission is acceptably low.

An email from Qantas with the subject line "Safely open our domestic borders" arrived in my inbox earlier today, spruiking this petition. Here's what the text needed to say for me to "show [my] support":

Dear Danger
Australians love to travel.

With summer holidays and Christmas just around the corner, many of us can’t wait to visit loved ones and support our regional communities, local businesses and our tourism industry.

But for that to happen, Qantas needs to refund passengers' money for flights we have cancelled, in accordance with the law, guidelines from the ACCC and plane [!] old good customer service.

The financial response to this crisis is our most important priority. And like many Australians we believe that money in our own pockets is more important than when it's in the pockets of someone else (accept if that someone else is a big, greedy business who has thumbed its nose at customers for years, like nickel-and-dimming them for an extra few hundred grams of checked baggage or charging triple figures for an exit row seat).

If you want to be reunited with your hard-earned money after months of being apart, please show your support.

Wow they had 16,000 signatures before they started advertising it - just heard on the news. Now they have started emailing that will increase.

Every bit adds pressure to have a more rational approach to border / hot spot area closures.

You are funny. But I like your thinking, and your version.

There are of course at least two positions to take on any decision. One of those to cut off one's nose to spite one's face or an alternative to accept things are not how one would like them to be and what will help to improve the situation for oneself and others.

My email from QF told me I could go to Dubbo for only 8,000 points.

The email regarding state borders was one of 5 spam emails I've received from Qantas in the past 24 hours. I think you're referring to the monthly newsletter.

This is what I’ve been arguing. Nationwide grounding of all QF and VA flights including freight and FIFO. If they can get QQ and ZL onboard all the better.
I really don’t see why the airlines need to continue to assist their own demise.

Who would you back in a legal contract dispute between BHP/RIO/FMG and QF/others?

No way on earth are QF or others that stupid I'd think. That would be absolutely and spectacularly biting the hand that feeds you. And I know from personal experience that large mining companies are not noted for their forgiving nature or altruism.
