Qantas passenger faces jail term for stealing

..... It's like smoking on planes.... people get outraged when someone is caught smoking. I don't really see that as major safety issue. If the crew catch someone smoking they can ensure the cigarette is properly extinguished and the safety of the plane is maintained. It is the passengers who smoke and are undetected that is my main concern.

Especially if it should start a fire on board.

Yep, a potential source of ignition of an onboard fire isn't a major safety issue:rolleyes:
It is very simpleton to suggest that by catching a culprit maintains the safety onboard. Who is to say that there aren't undeteced ciggies smouldering away?

people shouldn't be jailed for something this stupid. Not when it costs hundreds of $ a day.

There should be a 'DO NOT FLY' list made for these idiots.

That was my point :)

If they catch someone smoking they can check to ensure there are no smouldering cigarettes. It would potentially be negligent for the crew to not check. If they don't detect someone smoking - that is potentially worse. The culprit may have left a cigarette smouldering.

Why do you carry cable ties and duct tape on board a plane????
I read that he broke numerous pairs of plastic cuffs? Cable ties or duct tape would have done a better job by the sounds of it. Both I carry on board.

I can't speak for others, but people fly for all sorts of reasons. I carry cable ties to affix danger tags to installations I inspect and that is due to the fact I regularly fly with carry on only! I harbour no malice toward fellow pax ;)

i dont excuse the pax for a moment but anxiety and paranoia can be strong impulses and when mixed with powerful psychotic drugs and alcohol become overpowering.

I think its likely not as black and white concerning the pax although he certainly should not have been taking flights if he was aware of the potential situation he might be in.
