Flying CBR - MEL this morning I was sorely tempted to post about how diabolical the little channel dial is on the armrest radio having to use a pen to get from the crackly ABC onto anything else, but didn't.

Coming back this afternoon I encountered a 737 with the new fit out.

Seats felt a bit tighter but it was great to not have to watch the news or mythbusters. More of the same please QF.

As good as having the personal IFE is, I did find that the seat on my BNE-TSV flight a few weeks ago was a bit more uncomfortable than the 738 or 734s with the older generation IFE.

Unfortunately that's the case. I find the newer seats are definitly less comfortable than the older ones.

I flew on a 737-400 the other day that seemed to be refurbished. And the armrest dial selectors were gone! Replaced by the digital button ones like the older 737-800s have. The convertible seats in the first 5 rows seemed to be refurbished with new fabric. From a distance it looked like the rest of economy seemed to have new seats with the adjustable headrest wings. Although not much more than that had changed. Two shared video screens were not working.

Yep the new IFE in the latest 737-800s is great. Really can make a long trip fly by. They seem to have a good mix of tv programs and films available to suit a variety of tastes and they seem to change every month. Although the music choices seemed a bit unusual and don't change all that often. I don't like the new seats, although very similar to the older 737-800 seats they seem to have different lumbar support and are uncomfortable if you sit back.

I find these comments unbeliveable when people complain about short haul flights when many 5 hours + domestic flights eg Sydney to Perth are on very old 767's with NO personal IFE and instead poor main cabin screens.

I'll be living that hell next week

I have been on the new QF 737 in row 4 a couple of times now and felt the seats were a little narrower. At the time I did not think to much of it and just put it down to me putting on weight but it is disappointing if these new aircraft do indeed have narrower seats.

Wider fixed armrests to account for IFE screens?

You may well be right. I don't recall how an IFE screen compares to the space needed for tray tables in the armrests.

Also if sitting in 4A or 4F does it feels like the wall, at head level, curves in more than a 738 or 734?

Could this just be the case because the new seats haven’t been worn in enough yet, as opposed to the countless pax that have sat in the older aircraft? Wishful thinking perhaps that things will get better!

Hence my iPod touch has two male velcro strips on its back and can be "mounted" on the seat in front and forms a very handy version of personal IFE.

No - the seats are actually shorter.

While the head rests seem to move higher, this leave a gap at my shoulders with no proper support - sort of digs in. I'm 6', your're taller so it may be worse for you.

The IFE is better though.

Would be great if I used it/didn’t have an iPad :p

And also good if seat-to-seat chat messaging didn’t have to be enabled by each pax first… sort of makes the system useless if I have to get up to tell them to turn it on ;)

The IFE is good in that I can play games for 30 minutes or so to pass the time on a BNE-SYD flight.

Are you going to chat to a random stranger or someone you know?

Stroke of genius;) what a terrific idea. You won't be annoying the cough out of the pax in front with over enthusiastic pressing of of the IFE touch screen either. Gold star and a koala stamp for innovation

Thanks. Too many flights on 717s with no IFE at all (not even music) inspired me!

I also love the new IFE on the 737s but encountered an unusual problem as a result. On a recent TT flight, the arrival announcement began just after landing in AKL and a young lady a few rows behind almost had a tantrum, yelling etc. because the announcement had interrupted her movie. Apparently it was nearly finished and she was about to cry... Has that ever happened to anyone?
