Qantas Metal with AA flight number: Qantas club

Hi everyone,

I have booked a flight to USA through American Airlines on Qantas metal. I understand that Qantas Club grants access to lounges on a QF flight number. Does anyone know whether my boarding pass will be printed with a QF number and if I can use this to have access into the lounges? Additionally, will the Qantas Club benefit of luggage also apply on the QF metal legs?

Is there any reason you didn't book it on the QF code?


There used to be a reciprocal arrangement but in recent years it has been taken off the website and now specifically mentions QF Codeshares. Now it just says the below (and there is nothing on the AA website relating to Qantas Club):

Customers booked on an American Airlines flight number should refer to Amercian Airlines for their lounge eligibility and access policy.

Thanks for your help so far. There was a $700 price difference per passenger when booking on AA vs booking on QF.
I was wondering if the boarding pass is printed with a QF flight number then I should be able to access the lounge I presume however wasn't sure if anybody had previous experience with this.

I’m fairly certain QF and AA still have a reciprocal deal for lounge access so I would be cautiously optimistic you’ll get in.

Entry would be under AA lounge access rules, not QF, which is why QF mentions QF codes. If it’s on AA codes it’s up to AA, and as far as I know, AA still grant lounge access on AA codes to Qantas Club members.

Don’t take this as gospel but I’m somewhat confident.

You may still get lucky, but I wouldn't be counting on it.

Agree the written rules are vague but AA is clear that their members can access both Admirals Clubs and Qantas Clubs in Australia and the US when flying on both QF and AA codes. The reverse should be true for QF, and used to be explicitly written on the website, but for some reason they've over simplified it.

Access to Qantas Lounges on a oneworld flight number has never been allowed for Qantas Club members, so no change there. It was only for the bilateral deals with AA (and also previously BA, which ended with the JV).

The AA/QF JV uses lounge access as one of the key customer benefits when seeking authorisation from the ACCC. As I said I'm not 100% certain but I'd be quietly confident OP will get access. It's all a matter of who's paying for the lounge access, so it is up to AA as the marketing carrier, not QF.

Your boarding pass will have the AA flight number printed on it. Boarding passes no longer print the frequent flyer number for security reasons.

I remember some years ago a QP passenger being turned away from the international lounge as his boarding pass showed an AA flight number. He hadn't read the rules of requiring a QF flight number.

It is hard to argue with a lounge dragon saying "No" when the only available documentation says "No".

To be honest, it’s hard to get anywhere once the lounge dragon says “no” … written terms or whatever.

It will be SYD. That is a good point, I might give it a try but expect not being let in. Anything else would be an added bonus.

A bit late to this thread but if it is still relevant, from memory, check in for codeshare flights will be at the operating airlines check-in counters. You will be checking in at the Qantas check-in counters for your AA codeshare flight. The boarding pass will actually show the QF flight number but not sure if there will be a sub text with the AA codeshare flight number. The barcode probably has all that. I think there's a good chance the Qantas lounge will let you in.

I read there can be an issue with the status being recorded on the boarding pass.

If it says ‘silver’ or ‘oneworld ruby’ the default of course is ‘no access’ for that level of status.

QC however allows entry, so in some cases they have to update it with QC rather than ‘silver/OWR’.

It shouldn’t depend on the agent, but you may need to show the QC card.

Slightly off the original topic, but I think this explains why some Admirals Club agents in the US are confused about Qantas Club access — it’s not clear to the that they need to overtype the Silver/OneWorld Ruby status with the Qantas Club status, but it seems to be allowed once this is done.

I had the same issue occur when I used the Air France lounge in SFO (Qantas partner lounge). The agent said my boarding pass showed QF silver and then asked if I had Qantas Club. I showed my digital card and then the agent proceeded to let me in.
