As to where the a/c is coming from, there seems to be a simple answer: from Dec 3 it looks as if QF19/20 is downgraded to a domestic 332. They can stick that where the sun don't shine: I will be looking at alternatives for getting to MNL.

No such thing as a domestic 332 anymore. Each of the 332's has a bed one way or another.
 
Are there benefits swopping HND for NRT?
It depends on what you are doing/where in Tokyo you're going.
HND is the 2nd busiest airport in Asia and has far more domestic connection options then NRT. It is about 20 minutes train from Shinagawa and 30 mins from Tokyo station.
NRT is some distance away from Tokyo (think Melbourne/AVV or Brisbane/OOL). The fastest transport option into Tokyo takes 38 minutes to get to the North East of the city, the 2nd fastest option (Narita Express) takes an hour to Tokyo station. NRT is more ideal for most international connections, and depending on timing and transport used, can get you to the northern parts of Tokyo faster then from HND.

EXCUSE ME: the 28J/243Y 332's are described on the QF website as "domestic", which is precisely what they are.

The fleet upgrade means they can be easily interchanged between domestic and intl flying. The A332 features a lot on sin/bkk and perhaps cgk. No surprise it will be used on other routes too.
 
Sorry but the egg is on your face. This is the suites configuration.

Yes, of course they have suites, but the galley and toilet configurations are designed for domestic routes, ie up to 4 hours or so. They are IMHO not satisfactory for flights longer than this. And I repeat that the QF website describes them as domestic.

Whilst they have been designated as domestic on the QF site, their utilization suggests that they are domestic in name only.

It would seem as QF would agree that they are not solely domestic either, and have been some of the longer wide-body runs as well.
 
As I have commented in another thread, they should really have fitted out a subset of the 332's with a modified layout, say minus a couple rows of Y and a few J seats; this would have left plenty of room for adequate facilities for longer haul operations while still being perfectly viable commercially. But this would have required planning and forethought; instead we are left with the decidedly second-best situation we have now.

Whilst this is getting OT, the logical place to remove J seats is from the mini cabin. Would you prepare to take a hit in ticket price to factor in the loss of ~20% of the J cabin?
 
FYI, award seats for the new QF79/80 to be available from tomorrow (Saturday) morning. Get in quick!

took one of the 332s yesterday, would not want to cop one of these birds for long haul given the cramped pitch and lack of seat padding. obv not a problem a problem in J.

The seats haven't changed in Y. Just been refreshed with the iPad power for those without IFE previously.

Total toilets go from 7 to 6. And 2 to 1 in J.

The actual seatmap pages have been updated relatively recently; for a long time they just said "domestic", like the link.

As for toilets: in the old 332's there are 2 in J (1:18) and 5 in Y (1:40). There are now 1 in J (1:28) and 5 in Y (1:49): both a significant step backwards and IMHO inadequate for longer-haul operations. In the 333's the ratios are 1:14 in J and 1:38 in Y, much more like it.

Something must have changed: the Y cabin used to have 199 seats, now it has 243 in much the same space; that is 5+ whole rows more. There must be tradeoffs somewhere.

Umm no - none of the 332's that had 199 Y seats have been refurbed. In actual fact, there is a reduction in Y seats as the config was 36J/(265/268Y).

35W 0T + 30 Y 1T= 65:1 (but often W can use J toilets)
341Y 7T = 49:1

If you assume W can use on average 1 of 2 J toilets behind Row22 then
14F 2T = 7:1
64J 3T = 21:1
35W 1T = 35:1
30Y 1T = 30:1
341Y 7T = 49:1
