Qantas meals

Good grief! Why do they even bother, though the suppliers of all this overpackaged thin air are probably appreciative that they do.

Once i was so impressed by the food QF served on board I tried to replicate it at home.

Here's what was served up:

And here is my version which was 1000000% percent tastier!

The fibre and roughage was excellent, whilst more meat content than the QF version it made it a little chewy, but none the less still very satisfying.

Every evening QF flight I have had in the past 6 months has served those stupid lavosh and dip. There is more packing than food. I looked at the total weight of the meal on the packets - 35 grams. Not exactly a meal.

Apart from having something to do on the flight (play with your food) its a bit of a waste of time and a terrible waste of packaging.

A meat pie is one thing, curry or otherwise. But the comment about no choice - there hasn't been a meal choice in the domestic QF Y cabin for a very long time. Usually there is a choice of snack, but not for meals.

As for the snacks, I just grab a handful of milk bottles and licorice allsorts in preference to the rubbish snack that is offered.

Is there not a choice for Trans-Con flights?

You can tell the short haul fliers :D

On flights over 3 hours there is indeed a meal choice, I was offered Fish or Pork on Good Friday ex DRW to ADL, the aforementioned snack on the subsequent flight.

So after flying exclusively with Virgin for a little while I decided to fly some more on Qantas. Here's my flights this past week:

- Flight #1 (departure 5pm SYD-BNE): 3x 50c size slices of "sicilian chicken breast" and 3 little pieces of lavosh. Gross.
- Flight #2 (departure 7:55pm BNE-CNS): Pasta and meatballs. Gross.
- Flight #3 (departure 5:05pm CNS-BNE): Special meal request - fruit platter. Absolutely delicious, would have liked a few more strawberries though  - the normal meal was some mushy chicken pasta which looked revolting.
- Flight #4 (departure 8:25pm BNE-SYD): "Supper" - some butter bean dip and gluten free crackers - total weight probably 30g. I skipped it altogether. Everyone around me either transferred it straight into their rubbish bag, or took one bite and transferred it into their rubbish bag.

I also see the water bottles have been "enhanced" to the type with the foil(?) lid which is non-resealable. The passenger next to me on one of the flights skipped the meal but still wanted water and was given a cup of water. That totally defeats the purpose - I like to keep my water and sip it throughout the flight without having to finish it in a gulp just so I can stop holding it.

I could have sworn that QF557 BNE-SYD used to be a dinner flight. That was flight #4 which is now "supper".

So glad I ate in the lounges before hand.

Trans Con flights are classed as 'international' for catering, you have a choice of meals and they're a bigger serving. They typically also offer complimentary wine/beer after around 1pm instead of 4.

There was a very good post two years ago on the subject that really hit the nail on the head of what to expect when:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....detailed-information-qf-21585.html#post297595

From our perspective, Flights are classified by their service as either:

- Short (generally flights of <2hrs) eg MEL-SYD, BNE-CBR
- Medium (generally 2hrs-3hrs) eg MEL-BNE, SYD-ADL
- Long (generally 3hrs+) eg MEL-CNS, PER-DRW
- Perth City Flyer (PCF-All flights between PER & CBR/SYD/BNE/MEL/ADL)
- Standalone (services such as CBR-MEL, CBR-SYD and mining flights.

Short and Medium Services

Essentially these are the same services, however on "Medium" flights on what we call Tandem Services (a 'drop' service instead of a tray), there will usually be two choices of refreshment. Short services always one choice.

Economy Class

0500-0830: Breakfast = Tray + Hot Beverages
0831-1159: AM Refreshment = Sweet Refreshment Item + Hot/Cold Drinks
1200-1330: Lunch = Usually a Sandwich of sorts + Hot/Cold Drinks
1331-1559: PM Refreshment = Sweet Refreshment Item + Hot Cold Drinks
1600-1759: PM Ref'ment = Savoury Item + Free or Paid Wine/Beer/Soft Drink
1800-2000: Dinner = Tray w/. Hot Dinner + Free or Paid Wine/Beer/Soft Drink
2001-0459: Supper = Savoury Refreshment or Icecream + Free/Paid Drinks

*Beer and Wine is complimentary on all City Flyer services (service between BNE/CBR/ADL/SYD/MEL) that are scheduled to depart after 4pm on weekdays.

A tray will usually include juice/muffin/yoghurt or cheese/crackers, depending on the service.

Business Class

Meal times are classified the same as Economy class, but are much easier to follow (for crew anyway).

Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner - Served a meal with all the trimmings of course (complimentary everything) - Choice of Meal or Cereal/Salad

Refreshments/Supper - Food item usually something lighter (eg Panini) - Choice of lighter option or Salad, again with all the trimmings (hot bev/wine/bakery/salad/etc.)

Long Sectors and Perth City Flyer

These services will always include a Tray service, with choice of two meals in economy class (and three in Business).

Economy Class

0500-0930: Breakfast = Tray with Hot Brekkie or Cereal + extras. Second service is a water/biscuit towards end of the flight.
0931-1400: Lunch = Tray with choice of 2 hot meals + extras. Second service is an icecream/icypole (mostly frosty fruits atm) during the flight.
1401-2159: Dinner = Tray with choice of 2 hot meals + extras. Second service is an icecream/icypole during the flight.
2200-0459: Supper = Tray with choice of two hot meals + extras. Second service is a juice upon waking up into arrival city.

* On all Lunch/Dinner/Supper services EVERYDAY on all Perth CityFlyer services, Beer and Wine is complimentary. $6 during brekkie services.

Business Class

Meal times reflect that of economy class, with enhanced offering of course, with a full meal service on every flights.

Breakfast: Choice of 2 hot/1 cereal. 2nd Service = Hot Bev's/Buscuits
Lunch/Dinner: Choice of 2 hot/1 salad. 2nd Service = Cheese/Fruit/Icecream
Supper: Choice of 2 hot/1 salad. 2nd Service = Juice upon arrival.

*Of course, all alcohol is complimentary, during Lunch/Dinner Desert and Fortified wines are served alongside our premium beers and wines. All services have a hot beverage included with them after the main meal service.

The second service on NON-Perth City Flyer services is an icecream, the cheese/fruit/desert wines are an enhanced product on PCF services.

------------

Perth City Flyers are an enhanced product offering in all classes, with larger trays in economy and more side items, and an enhanced service in Business class, especially the desert and hot beverage service.

Standalone

SYD-CBR-SYD - Usually a choice of refreshment (snack) plus Juice in the morning and Water in the afternoon (drop service)

SYD-MEL-SYD - Similar to a 'Short' service, but lunch is a tray service instead of a drop service. Drinks service may vary and have a limited option.

Mining flights (eg, PER-KTA-PER, BNE-ISA-BNE) - Due to contracts with the mining companies, a tray serivce is provided on all services. For breakfast this will include one option (hot or cold) and a yoghurt/juice/muffin. For all other services, this will include one option (sandwhich or hot meal) and cheese/crackers/chocolate). Whether or not you get a hot meal will depend on what time of the day you fly, and whether you are heading to, or from the main capital city.

The ones that always leave me feeling deprived are CBR-HBA via MEL and the reverse. Two short flights, each offering only a greasy sandwich or less, but together covering the whole viable dinner time. The direct CBR-HBA flight isn't at a suitable time for my usual schedule. If I'm flying Qantas, I try to remember to eat early in the lounge (but it's always too early for me). If I'm flying Virgin, I don't have that option, but at least the sandwich available onboard is usually better.

What Qantas has done right with airline food:
- The bacon, egg and leek pie in Business class. that was just...brilliant =)
What Virgin Australia and Jetstar have done right with airline food:
- Offering Pepsi instead of coke

What Qantas haven't done right with airline food:
- No pepsi

I think that this is starting to turn into the norm now...eat before you fly because your not really getting a 'meal' at 'meal' times...

Agreed! Call me a cynic... but perhaps they are desensitising us so we don't miss the food when Jet* takes over the route :p

I fail to see that as a win... Pepsi Max is gag worthy :S Gimme Coke Zero any day ;)

Why not have Coke and Pepsi?

and.... coke zero?

Some airlines do in the USA, but it's not common here.

The strangest thing I saw was Pepsi at McDonalds at the Luxor in LAS. The Luxor is Pepsi only, and all the vendors inside the premises must also comply with this (similar to how KFC in WA and NT for a long time had CCA beverages whilst the rest had Pepsi Co.)
