Indeed. On the recent AFF HKG lounge crawl I visited the QF lounge for the first time.

After 10 minutes I was ready to move on.

I'm a newbie when it comes to lounges. We ended up spending 3 hours in the HK lounge, and it went so quickly, loved it!

I think there were only 2 flights, QF30 and QF 128, and the lounge only looked about half full.

Thanks for everyone's advice and tips, was really cool.

Scott.

Sure ... I was generalising.

FWIW if faced with the QF lounge being the only option I would not even consider an early arrival ...

Apologies, the reference to time had me thinking it was a specific response to the OP’s question.

Personally I wouldn’t rush to spend extended time in the Qantas lounge but if the OP is looking to use vouchers this could well be a one-off, exciting adventure..!

Regards,

BD

In town check in the day before and you can rock up @ 730am when they open ;)

That’s stamina. I walked in with Mrs 340 after a good lunch in Wing F (this was while Pier F was undergoing the refurb). It was a zoo. Mrs 340 didn’t even sit down before saying, “I’m not staying here.” Straight back to Wing F.

That must have been a fair while ago. QF food is now much better than any of the CX lounges.

If you want your peace and quiet the QF lounge is good as there are plenty of seats, but for the food the CX lounges are much better.
the Cha Sui (BBQ pork) rice is average in HK standard.

for example, at dinner time they bring up the dessert and the ice creams on a cart and served one by one, and it seems to be timed to a specific flight, so if your flight leaves earlier you will miss out on the ice cream !

The best catering is timed to serve pax on QF128 and QF30. So after 8pm for example no more a la carte dish of the day.

It wasn’t the food as we’d alreay eaten. It was the noise and mass of people that made it unbearable.

The pain you suffer, such a first world problem. ;):). I have a funny feeling that when I am in HK is in a month or so MrsM and MissM will want to have a look at the QF lounge, however it will back to the CX F lounges within a short time frame.

Why on earth would you want to spend an entire day in a lounge? Do you mean 16.30?
As opposed to hanging around after you have checked out? There are times when I just want to head to the airport early and relax before my flight. I'm not going to do any sightseeing and I'd need to find something to pass my time and lounge can be as good a place as any.

actually if you can access both, you should do so and visit QF lounge first - for the shower as there are hardly any queues. and it is right after immigration so you will walk pass it anyway.

and then head to CX lounges for the food, drinks and airport view, pick one closer to your gate. as the CX lounges shower can be packed, once I saw some UK J pax arguing with the shower cleaning lady because he had to wait !

I think I have the story, but it's some several months from last post here ....

I'm arriving at HK via a CX flight in J at 11:40 hrs.

My QF128 flight to SYD leaves at 18:25 hrs. So over six hours to kill. Not planning on leaving airport. Luggage transferred to new flight, so no luggage check-in issues.

What J lounges can I access, starting at around six hours prior to QF departure ?

All of them. Qantas, The Pier, The Wing, The Deck, The Bridge.

Personally the best is The Pier, though it can be quite a hike to your gate for departing flight as these are often in the mid 20s. Second choice would be the Deck which is pretty much next to the Qantas lounge. Alternatively with that long to kill you could sample all and make your own judgement!

Edit: I'm assuming you are either travelling J on Qantas or have sufficient status (i.e. Sapphire)

The Pier is the best of the CX lounges in terms of food, however it is not buffet style and you have to be served. means a bit of waiting.
I believe the pier you probably have to queue for showers as there are generally more people and less shower room.

remember for the wonton noodles you can instruct them (nicely), so they give you more wonton and no noodle per bowl..

the bridge is smaller, a bit more crowded and nosier, but you can grab your own food. the choices from "the bakery" have shrank over the years....

I find that around that time (early morning), the Pier is pretty quiet. Last time there was absolutely no wait for showers and the nap room was almost empty.

That sounds good ... to know I can access all or most of them.

I'm definately going to 'ask a few questions' about boarding my J flights home, as to avoid a few issues I had on F coming into SIN.

It assumes you have your onward boarding pass for Qantas. I dunno if they have fixed the issue now (something about all going over to the same booking system or whatever) but in the past it was not uncommon for CX to not be able to issue onward QF boarding passes. So you had to either wait in the transit area until the QF transit desk opened (three hours before departure), or enter Hong Kong, take the Airport Express to Kowloon, and get your boarding pass there befoe heading back to the airport. The latter option was viable for connections in the 5-6 hour range where you'd be sitting waiting for a couple of hours for the transit desk to open.

If that's now a thing of the past it will be welcome news :)

CX was able to issue my QF boarding passes when I flew TPE-HKG-SYD-AKL in September 2017...
