I don't think you quite have the aircraft variants right. A350-900 isn't really fighting the b787-9 they're more of a do everything plane and is closer to the b787-10 in capacity. Basically it would be able to do the b787-10 mission AND more if needed. The existing b787-10 orders i suspect only exist because it would take way too long to replace their 330 fleet if they stuck to the a350 family only. Ordering both a350 and b787 means more planes coming in sooner. Otherwise from a bigger picture fleet perspective it just makes more sense to get a359s that are much more flexible in what they can fly.I think it will probably be more 787-10s. The -10 is perfect for high density Asia and offers some of the lowest per seat costs on any widebody, making it very attractive for Singapore, Hong Kong, India etc. I don’t think they will go for the a350-900, as that would probably cross over too much with the role of the 787-9 which already excels in the ultra long thin routes QF flies. I wonder if JQ would like to have 787-9s to give them some extra range and higher capacity for their Japan , Seoul routes etc.

Wouldn’t they just go for a higher density -1000?No i think the wildcard here is the 777X as a380 replacement (which is what most of the world is doing). If QF really believes they need some ultra high capacit
