Qantas launches new A330-200 on domestic routes

Maybe I wasn't clear. In fact re-reading what I wrote, I would say I definitely wasn't clear

Some of the A330-200's now flying with Jetstar were originally flying with a kangaroo on their tail, on domestic services. THey were originally purchased for this purpose, and were transferred to JQ when JQ began international ops.

I actually believe they weren't so much as purchased but more "given" to QF by airbus on the account of their A380 order. I might be wrong but that's the story I heard around the campfire.

oz_mark is correct.

Qantas purchased the first 4 332's that JQi now use (EBA, EBB, EBC & EBD).

They initially flew domestic QF services from late 2002.

They were configured for domestic operations but there were problems with refueling making for too slow turnaround times.

In late 2006 they were transferred off to JQi. In Mid 2007 EBE and EBF were delivered straight to Jetstar.

The later EBH and EBI were virtually cost free and began International operations for Qantas in Dec 2007 / Jan 2008. Another international configured, EBI began operation in Feb 2008.

Slighty off topic maybe but it's my understanding that VH-EBK,currently in service with QF mainline will soon be heading off to Jetstar,I don't know whether it will happen before QF get the next delivery though, which I think is scheduled for February.

Yes thats old news.... - and yes it will happen before the next QF A330 rocks up, VH-EBK is due to pop off to Jetstar this month.

I'm in the Qantas Club at Perth now having just checked in for QF568 to Sydney.

The good news - I'm almost certain it's the new A332.
The bad news - there's a door broken in the business class cabin and 15 passengers have been downgraded!

It would appear the inbound flight (QF583) departed 83 minutes late from Sydney and arrived 71 minutes late into Perth.

I wonder if it will make the papers.

I disagree with some of the history presented here, the A330's were pretty much dropped in as free fries with the initial order when you look at the numbers:

Boeing valued its Qantas order at about $USD1.2 billion for 6 of the 747-400ER's. Qantas said its total order--31 planes in all--meant it would spend $USD4.6 billion over 10 years. The Airbus share would be worth about $3.4 billion back when the order was made in 2000.

The Airbus order included the 12 A380s, along with seven A330-200 and six A330-300 jets. So if you assume the A380 was discounted to match the 747-400 which is unlikely, then the A380 share of the order is 2.4 Billion for 12 aircraft, that makes the 13 A330s worth 1Billion or well under half the price of the 747! Let me put it in table form:

6 747-400 $1.2B or $200M each
12 A380 $2.4B or $200M each (methinks it was probably closer to $250M)
13 A330 $1B or $76 M each

7 of the A330 were intended for domestic operations to replace the 767-200 fleet, which at the time of the announcement were getting a lot of attention on the opposite side of the fence at Ansett for their age and condition. 3 or the 7 A330-200 aircraft had their delivery deferred in Feb 2002 for obvious reasons and with the purchase of the AA 737-800 order and Impulse aircraft the rest was history with Jetstar etc while the rest of the order proceeded in order to phase out the older 747 fleet including the SP's.

The subsequent delays in the A380 deliveries also resulted in some cheap A330's and the option of a higher gross weight A330 at a good price which appealed to JQ, its fair to say QF have done very well from their Airbus purchases.

$76M for an A330 when the list price is circa $190M?

Must apply for an Amex Centurion card, I've got to get me one of them at that price!

Keep in mind thats Year 2000 USD$$$, at the time it was labelled a great victory for Airbus but in hindsight I cannot see how they made money, it was probably a good order for Boeing to loose. Kudos to the Qantas dealmakers for the deal they did, adding with the collapse of Ansett its not hard to see how Qantas has done so well since despite the difficult conditions at various times!

If I read this article (Jetstar to buy 15 new aircraft, ramp up services from Melbourne | Herald Sun), you'd think it was Jetstar that was adding the A330-200 with AVOD across the country

JETSTAR'S march across Australian skies will continue next year with the budget carrier adding 15 new aircraft to its domestic fleet and ramping up services out of Melbourne.

[...]

Later this month the airline will unleash its latest weapon on domestic trans-continental services - its first domestic A330-200 with video-on-demand in all classes and new, wider seating.

Somebody seems confused

.

What the? How does a broken door lead to 15 pax being downgraded?

Either the plane is U/S and no-one flies, or it's fit to go and shouldnt matter where you sit.

if there were 16 downgraded that would suggest to me that the ratio of passengers to emergency exits was not good enough. I don't see how that's any different to increasing the number of exits as the size of a plane gets larger. Same thing here: decrease the number of passengers as a door isn't' working properly.

I flew this new bird on QF568 PER-SYD again last night (Monday). At check-in I made small talk with the agent and asked if the door was fixed in business class. She said that apparently people have been complaining about being pushed in the back of the head - the touchscreen TVs! Sad, but apparently true.

I have had that problem before. People don't seem to appreciate that it is touch screen and not push screen!
(Yes, if at first the screen does not respond, press on it with the WHOLE of your body weight! Don't worry about the poor guy in front trying to sleep! It will do him good to have his head knocked around like he's going 10 rounds with Mike Tyson!)

OK now I get the comment about being pushed in the back of the head.

Clearly my brain isn't in gear

Interestingly I have heard from others that JQ may run a 332 across to Perth, but will be sans AVOD.

Sans AVOD doesn't surprise me, but will they have the video units for hire?

Actually I'd guess those pics where taken in the new TT B737 (square windows which should really be 3 inchs higher give it away).

The last pic shows three abreast with a window. No where on the new A330 is there three abreast Y seats next to a window.
