Is it just me, or does this mean more people are just going to be loading up J without status or class :p

I don't know how much of a good thing this is, but I assume J will always be full from the 7th of July!

Do look forward to earning reasonable SC's in DOM Y travel thou.

And, I am still in the belief there should be some form of SC earning in X and U fare buckets. At the end of the day, status should be earned being on metal, how you pay is really irrelevant.

It will mean more people in the pool looking for an upgrade (and maybe more people complaining they didn't get an upgrade even though there was an empty seat )

Why would that be? NonStatus passengers have always been able to buy a ticket and upgrade it. Just because they can do that on Rededeals doesn't make it any different?

QF like any other airline is a business and they can do what they like, in a way that meets their corporate objectives. If you don't like the changes or how they or any other airline operates, you have the choice to take your business elsewhere (it's oft referred to as voting with your feet).

Here I agree 100% with you and my company has just set up a corp account with DJ.

ALL AFFers have the right to voice our concerns here, to discuss them openly with other AFFers and not to be told, by anyone but a moderator, what we can and can not say or for AFFers to apologize to Red Roo for the comments of other AFFers that they may not agree with. Fair go if you wish to apologize to Red Roo for your comments but that is where it ends. No AFFer has the right to speak for other AFFers. The comments of other AFF members on this QF forum and other AFF forums are their own and need to be respected by all AFFers as their honest and heart felt comments on that topic, even if you do not agree with them.

So lets discuss / debate the issues and not the people.

You needs points to do upgrades. Points which you need to earn. If the points were earned via flights, SCs and Status would have also been earned. So I suggest that MOST of those with the points to do upgrades will also have earned SCs and tier status.

What I want to know is, would a WP on a red-e be considered for the upgrade before others with lower status but higher class fares. If that's the case, I'm sure there's not much to worry about.

Well rededeals can be significantly lower and I just see this possibly making it difficult to get J anyseat rewards and even more people filling somewhat crowded lounges.

I don't know, I like the changes in general, but everyone seems to be getting something, the only people getting left in the cold by all the changes over the last 6 months seem to be Platinums. The only reason I still have a want to achieve platinum now is for F lounge access when doing INT flights, which isn't all that often.

I might be a bit of a wet blanket, but this would have been a nice benefit for people with status ie. People that do a lot of travel and could really use a cheap bump every now and then.

Even as a WP I still earn about half me points from cards. In fact I only this year cracked more points from flying than from cards. So I'm not sure most people with points have SC.

Red Roo, fair question. Can you please provide an answer? Many WPs, like me would like to know where we stand.

The upgrades from any class all seemed to work OK in the previous incarnation when upgrades from red edeals were permitted. I think it is really drawing a long bow to suggest this has a negative effect on platinums and golds. In fact it is giving something back to those who do the "hard yards" flying in red e-deals to get their status, they will now be able to upgrade those flights if they desire.

Status would only come into it for an ODU. If there is no U available, all taken by NBs, a WP is not getting an upgrade until they get to the airport (or more U is available).

I earned over 70K points from flying last year, I earned several times that in various promos, credit cards and etc. So it's generally the case that people have more points then SC's I think with how many companies and cards chew out points these days.

Domestic upgrades are confirmed (or denied) at the time of request. It doesn't matter what status you are. So WP have no advantage over any other type of passenger.

Whilst I think that these changes will benefit passengers on QANTAS, I don't think they will benefit frequent flyers:
  • competition for J awards/upgrades will be tougher
  • there will be more people making Silver/Gold/Platinum
  • QANTAS will be forgoing revenue in making these changes
The net result will be lower profits, and cutbacks somewhere else.

I earn ~23k points from a Adl/Mel/Bkk/Mel/Adl flight for ~$2k (QF -Y and JQ J Max). Paying with my QF Amex Ulti card I earn an extra 5k points or ~20% of what I earned from the flight points. YMMV.

Quick question, apologies in advance if already been answered:prior to July 7 no-one could upgrade a Red-e-deal and from 7th July anyone can upgrade from a Red-e-deal.What happens to the U inventory from 7th July? Will this result in less availability of J Classic Awards and /or JASA's due to flyers of any status on BFOD upgrading ?

I spend $X on airfares a year. I spend 10x$X a year on other things. That more than makes up the other 80%.

I can only comment on international upgrade requests as that is all I have done. Ok sure if done at the Lounge you get the upgrade approved or not. If done online, I have waited weeks, as a WP, for confirm or deny.

BTW I like your signature.

Ok different strokes for different blokes. Air fares are 75% or more of my yearly spend.

Am I the only one debating backwards and forwards whether I should try upgrade my next flight after July 7, on July 7?

I don't need to be up the front, but the novelty of it is bugging me :p
