Main points as I see them.
“The previous four economy fare families have been reduced to three and now include Red eDeal, Flexi Saver and Fully Flexible fares.
“Regardless of which fare type you book for Qantas domestic travel we offer a meal or refreshment, inflight entertainment (except on QantasLink services) and a checked baggage allowance of one piece of luggage up to 23 kilograms.
Qantas Domestic Fares
- Red eDeal –the lowest year-round fares we offer providing the best value for money
- Flexi Saver – fares offering a greater range of flexibility and choice
- Fully Flexible – fares offering complete flexibility with full refund option
- Business – our full premium fare, which provides additional baggage allowances, Neil Perry designed menus, Business class Frequent Flyer points earn and access to dedicated Business lounges in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra domestic terminals
“Qantas remains committed to ensuring it is best for business and accordingly we are very pleased to be making these changes to strengthen our domestic and regional offering” Mr Gurney said.
Qantas Frequent Flyer CEO Mr Simon Hickey said further enhancements have also been made to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program as part of the domestic fare restructure, providing even greater benefits for the program’s 7.8 million members.
“From 7 July 2011, all Qantas Domestic Economy fares, now including Red eDeals, will be eligible for Domestic Flight Upgrade Awards to Business using Qantas Frequent Flyer points, where available.” Mr Hickey said.
“In addition all flexible domestic fares will be classed as ‘Economy’ resulting in improved Status credit earn and upgrade rates for members on more fares.
“When buying one of these new fares for a service operated by Qantas, our members are guaranteed to continue earning at least 1000 points on even the shortest flight or most affordable ticket.
“The Qantas Frequent Flyer program is also set to roll out more exciting changes for members over the coming months. For example, in late 2011 we plan to roll out a smoother, more convenient points upgrade request and notification process, including SMS confirmation of upgrades.
“We are committed to providing better value for our members and to keep evolving our product to ensure the program remains at the forefront of loyalty offerings around the world.”

No more discount economy earn and all fares OK for upgrades!

New Domestic Fares and further Frequent Flyer changes

In May we said that the changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program were the first of a number of enhancements this year. We did listen to your feedback then and now we can let you know about the next round of improvements.

We are changing our domestic fare structure to be more simple and flexible and removing the Super Saver fare from economy. And we are also removing the restrictions on upgrades for Qantas domestic fares.

The new fares families will be:
  • Red e-Deal – our lowest year-round fares offering the best value for money
  • Flexi Saver – flexible fares offering a greater range of choice
  • Fully Flexible – offers complete flexibility with full refundability to provide the most choice for travel
And for Frequent Flyers this means:
  • Earning more Status credits on some domestic fares;
  • All domestic Qantas Any Seat Awards are now upgradeable too;
  • Less points are needed to request an upgrade award for some fares on domestic Qantas flights ; and
  • Domestic Red e-Deals are now upgradeable with points.
A lot of you purchase domestic Red e-Deal fares which were often great prices but did not allow you to request an upgrade. And sometimes Business class is just what you need!

The changes will be in place on qantas.com on 7 July 2011. If you have a forward booking for travel after then, you will be able to request an upgrade (even if it is a Red e-Deal). Just make sure you wait until 7 July to put your request in.

An email is going to be sent to members later today and we will be updating qantas.com with additional information.

Thanks for all the feedback you provided when we posted the changes on 17 May. It was great to hear what you thought about the changes and I did feed back to the team what you thought. Keep it coming!

More enhancements are still to come and we will keep you posted.

Latest QFF announcement: Dom upgrade improvements, Y- flex earns at Y rates

This announcement is hot off the QF press.

In summary:

  • DOM Y fare buckets reduced to three (Red eDeal, Flexi Saver and Fully Flexible)
  • ODU now available across all DOM Y buckets
  • DOM Y- flexible fare now earns at Y rates
  • Smoother upgrade process and SMS confirmations planned
Now this is going to annoy some SG and WP members, as it means particularly with changes to DOM Y- earning rates that it will be easier for members to qualify at their levels. However, I'd be interested to see how these changes stack up on the economics front compared to lifetime qualification levels for other programs and if it makes QFF a more attractive option.

Qantas Introduces New Domestic Fares and Further Frequent Flyer Enhancements
Sydney, 23 June 2011

Qantas today announced a new domestic fare structure providing customers with greater simplicity, flexibility and further Qantas Frequent Flyer benefits when travelling with Qantas. The changes apply across the domestic mainline and regional networks.

Qantas Group Executive Commercial, Mr Rob Gurney said the new fare structure would be implemented for tickets booked from Thursday 7 July 2011.

“We have listened to feedback from our customers and are committed to ensuring our customers have access to a range of user-friendly and flexible fare options,” Mr Gurney said.

Good job Qantas. Well done.

Two improvements that I really like....Upgrades from Red eDeals, and full Y earning on all flexi fares.

No complaints at all from me.

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restructure/profit update/RR settlement& Int Route chang

No more discount economy earn and all fares OK for upgrades!

The way i read it, Red eDeals would still be discount economy - they specifically say all "Flexible" fares will be classed on economy

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Meh. SC earn is economy for flexible fares. Shame that a YASA X award won't earn full economy SCs...

Rereading it I agree, bugger!

I look forward to reading the finer details in the email.. If it reads as you have posted i'll give it a big thumbs up..

I see this as a very positive thing except for me as my main QF travel is ABX to SYD where no business class is offered anyway! but for other I think
it's a major step.
Well done QF.

Red E deals booked before July 7th, will they still be eligible for the full earn rate?

Re read it, still at discount eco rate.

Okay, this is good, thank you Red Roo. I'm surprised since these aren't going into effect until 7 July why AJ didn't announce them himself in yesterday's speech. Would have dampened some of the negativity attributed to it, and clearly demonstrated that positive action is being taken.

I have moved the posts about the confirmed domestic fare changes into a separate thread here from yesterdays speech thread..

I was amongst the first to complain about the last round of changes.

I'd like to be amongst the first to give a thumbs up to these changes. Well done.

Some great changes coming through here, particularly the red e-deal upgrade!

Looking forward to seeing further enhancements continuing this positive trend. :)

Red Roo, can I suggest one minor change to the announcement?

Please can you remove the word enhancements, these really do seem to be genuine improvements! icon14.png

Looking forward to more announcements like this.
