Having just done a JQ 787 at 9 abreast there is no way you will get me on a QF aircraft at 9 abreast and 17 inch wide seat.


It's fine on a 737 for an hour long hop to SYD, but it's not acceptable for a premium airline when the flight time is anything over about 3 hours.
 
Having done a few Jetstar, Scoot and Norwegian 787 flights on Y I can handle 3x3x3 so long as the pitch is decent
 
Wish I remembered the exact words, but saw Alan Joyce on the news say something about really out there destinations.
 
I'm looking forward to QF launching MEL-DFW, AJ did mention it as a potential route for their 789's! Hopefully they are seriously considering it. :)
 
Is there any news on the other three refurbed 744 ... (non ER).

They are part of the five 744s that are slated to be replaced with the eight new B789s. The other two are OJM and OEB.
 
Only issue I see there is that United has a 2-2-2 J layout and the new QF J Suite doesn't appear to be able to work in anything more than 1-2-1...

You cannot really compare like that as they are different styles of seats. Obviously the Qantas one is offset, so more rows, whereas the United ones are side by side. Only way to compare is to look at how many seats fit into the same floor space.

Maybe QF can restart SYD-ORD again with 787?
I don't see how they can "restart" passenger service to a port they've never actually flown to. :P I believe ORD was planned, marketed, then cancelled just before service was due to start. Some sort of deal with UA is the rumored reason.

Well, they can "restart" marketing for SYD-ORD anyway :mrgreen:
 
I think BOM is a good option... lots of India travellers coming to AU and business is definitely picking up.

Nine-abreast in Y according to this.

Some passengers have complained that the economy class seats on the 787-9 when it is configured at nine-abreast are too narrow at around 17 inches.
But Mr Joyce said that configuration was likely for Qantas, given the only carriers in the world to have an eight-abreast economy class were Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. "Nine-abreast is the standard," he said.

He really does talk a load of baloney. That press conference was just drivel too. Again Joyce enters QF in race to the bottom.
 
Whilst those of us 'in the know' are extremely anti 9 across in the 787s (and 3-4-3 in the 777s), you must remember that the average punter still does not really know nor care even what type of aircraft they're getting onto. Most maybe only hear it in the safety briefing and then promptly forget it. I've had people at work tell me about their trips on Jetstar 767s, Qantas 777s and so on. So whilst I certainly won't be traveling as far as MEL - DFW in Y on a QF 787, plenty of 20-something hipsters off to South-by-Southwest in Austin, TX just won't care.

I have no doubt at all that the 787s will be a great success for QF, and I'll probably go as far as SIN in Y on them.
 
For those wondering about CASA changing their feelings about ETOPS, well they have. From 1 July 2015 under the Extended Diversion Time Operations rules CASA will consider twin turbine engine operations over 180 minutes.

Personally I will avoid flying in an economy seat on a 9 across 787 or 10 across 777. IIRC the A350 has more space but from people who I have spoken to other issues have been the narrowness of the aisle, on the other aircraft the seats are not necessarily that much wider but there is more shoulder room, aisle space that gives more comfort. IMO even though I am not big, 72 kgs, I even found the 747 to be slightly cramped but not as much as an EK 777.

So, many new routes from Perth would theoretically be possible. Cape Town, Johannesburg (and in fact most of Africa), Istanbul and even Rome seem to be within reach. Germany would be a bit of a stretch but also seems possible - though I suspect any European routes would be via DXB anyway.

In regards to the potential new destination's QF placed on the ASX investor slide yesterday, obviously these are speculation at this stage, although seeing CPT on the map doesn't surprise me at all.
Again speculation, but I can see route having massive potential. (probably ex-PER).

Not withstanding the 787-9 order, are the Fantastic Financial Results from the Red Roo.

What a triumphant turnaround!
 
To be fair - 3-3-3 seating on the 787 is standard. There are only two exceptions for the japanese carriers.

Also, with the exception of the A380 First suite - I'm not sure Qantas is known for innovation when it comes to seating? MK1 skybeds were pretty much already surpassed by full flats on BA/VS by the time they were introduced. Premium economy seating is nothing innovative. MkII skybeds suffer from design problems (droop).
