The deal with EK has also greatly assisted QF. Cutting FRA and putting all those pax on to EK metal ex DXB has its benefits.

Years ago there were rumours of a direct flight to Rio. That was when QF pulled out of Buenos Aires. The published map is pretty inaccurate, given QF already flies a direct SYD-SCL flight. I think Rio is in range with the 787. Also it would link with the Emirates flight to Dubai. I guess the Dallas flight would probably also be better with a 787.

It will be interesting to see, whether its 2-4-2 or 3-3-3. A full 3-3-3 would be annoying though, so i'd prefer 2-4-2 myself. Given I'm a traveller to less common destinations any added routes to South America or Africa would be great for me. Africa via Dubai is a long trip.

This is BA 787-9 layout including First.... well that reduces the weight. but at 216 seat probably not what AJ was thunking about.
this is 3-3-3 in Y and 2-3-2 in Y+

EDIT: oops that's a long pic - sorry, what was I thunking about

The last QF-metal flight to FRA was over two years ago?!

I am aware of that. Takes time for these things to have an effect. They've been in an alliance for a bit over 2 years. That route alone was losing god knows how much money. Would have preferred that they worked with QR but EK's network to Europe is huge and wouldn't be surprised if QF use one of the 787-9's to launch DXB from maybe BNE/PER.

Given LA are already flying SCL-AKL-SYD using 787 with ETOPS330 would think QF has a pretty good argument

I guess there's more diversion options in the South Pacific. The Southern Indian has absolutely nothing.

Nine-abreast in Y according to this.

Some passengers have complained that the economy class seats on the 787-9 when it is configured at nine-abreast are too narrow at around 17 inches.
But Mr Joyce said that configuration was likely for Qantas, given the only carriers in the world to have an eight-abreast economy class were Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. "Nine-abreast is the standard," he said.

Having just done a JQ 787 at 9 abreast there is no way you will get me on a QF aircraft at 9 abreast and 17 inch wide seat.

Thought QF was a premium airline?
