Qantas flyers empty pockets of $30 million in loose change

Now where's the story about how Qantas takes 50% for providing the service while volunteers get zippo?

Great to see behind the scenes. I often donate and just presumed that it was sorted at a bank.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

That's a bit cynical (although one might wonder whether QF get a tax deduction for the "donation":confused::shock:;))

There are some collection agencies... er, "charities", that manage to do a lot worse.

There have been 4 Corners/7:30 report items on this in the past, where the number passed through is, IIRC, as low as 10%. But as the charities point out, 10% of something is better than 100% of nothing....

It's all in the perspective, I guess.

I saw a similar report a few years back where Surf life saving spent 80 cents in the dollar on marketing.
Make no mistake - charities are commercial businesses without tax :)

If they got a tax deduction for the donation, I would have thought they would need to claim the $30 million as taxable income first.

However it's right to be cynical about "news" stories which are little more than recycled press releases. And the bit at the end of the article which says "News Corp Australia in partnership with Qantas is offering readers the chance to win flights to the value of $25,000 to bring loved ones home for Christmas from any Australian or international city on the airline’s network. For more details on how to enter the Feels Like Home competition, go to escape.com.au" is a red flag that this is a PR piece designed to gather data and revenue.

They seriously take a 50% cut of the donations?

I'm sure Red Roo will clarify any concerns about the administration of donations next week.

The counting house volunteers happily and proudly volunteer their time to UNICEF.

All of the money counted is donated directly to UNICEF. UNICEF then allocates the donations to programs they deem most in need.
