Next month or two me and wife used to just pay taxes and points $250-300 tax

Stand corrected on the price - but then again I probably would not fly on airlines that are coming up. Not heard good things about some of them:)

C'mon China Southern in whY for 26 hours will be fine!

Mind you best not tell the OP what QF charge for a J seat to HNL on a 763...

News reports re QANTAS lately ??

Latest news from QF that I have heard:

Brand new lounge in SIN
New j sleeper service
New j international menu with small bites
New uniform
New alliance opening up one stop connections to Africa and Europe
New (highly expensive) cash card coming
New freighter aircraft
Heroic landing by magnificent QF crew after engine failure attributable to the manufacturer rather than the high quality local maintenance team
Resolution of industrial relations issues leading to noticeably happier crew on the 100 flights I have taken in the past 14 months

Have you thought about *paying* for your fare rather than complaining? Getting the right fare, you can apply for an upgrade. Then you're getting better use of points.

As has been mentioned, you have to have been hiding under a rock to realise this has been happening. Very few FF programs in the world are actually valuable for Economy/Coach travel. It's the Premium cabins that become value for points/money (although upgrading you really want to be Platinum or Gold, or your chances of getting the upgrade aren't that great).

Use points on things that are better value. AU-US Economy redemptions are only a tiny percentage of what you can spend your points on.

Want bad value? Look at the QF FF store.

04JUN13 BNE - SYD - LAX QF20/QF107
11JUN13 LAX - BNE QF16

96,000 points + $607.43

Or $1,308.00

and you'd earn 15,657 ff points and 100 sc's for taking the flight.

BYE QANTAS

Since you have at least 96,000 points, do not want to burn points because its cheaper buying a Hawaiian Airlines ticket, and then ultimately leaving the Qantas FF program .... you may transfer your 96,000 points to my frequent flyer account, my details are Alanslegal QF#12345678, relationship: cousin. :D

Easy, use Virgin points. No fuel surcharges to the US just $130 odd government taxes and Macquarie bank fees.

Yep, agree, just booked a virgin flight for friends syd-lax return, taxes less than $130. Certainly made me think twice about using qantas points for my next trip but no point having them if I'm not going to use them, sometimes you just gotta suck it up.

Funnily enough I was also looking at MEL-LAX flights earlier today.
QF have one for $1303 (I'm looking at mid-June).
For using points for an Economy award it is indeed poor value, even compared to other FF programs eg. SQ.

So yes I do agree with the OP that 96,000pts plus $802 is a bit of a joke. The taxes component surprised me. I was expecting maybe half of that.

Might just fly United myself. They had a special through Zuji that was emailed to me a few hours ago MEL-LAX return for $999.48 that matched my dates.

Those low tax figures would be from a very long time ago... I booked a OW 140,000 award through QF in early 2011 i think and paid about $550 in taxes and surcharges then had to revise the itinerary a couple of months later (just a few flights of the 16 or so) but there had been two fuel surcharge increases in that time and the taxes and surcharges had gone up to over $800... Wouldn't be surprised if it was more now...

So yes, QF economy redemptions are rubbish and you probably would be better looking for cheap cash fares or move to using a different loyalty program.. In economy i would say those OW awards are some of the few that add up...

Just called said taxes never lower
22 May bne LAX 96,000 points + $844.74
11 June LAX
