Sure flying is good value, but then it seems to me that fuel is no worse that other mentions to earn points. The fuel offer also provides a transparent points price being directly related to the forgone fuel discount.

I thought so too. For the average amount I save each week on fuel, I think I’d be better off with the limited QFF points earning instead, others might see it differently. I guess it depends how much your fuel costs ;)

Well mrsdrron got the triple points offer for this week and we will be home Thursday and need to do a big shop.
We both will be taking the points Vs fuel discount as Mrsdrron's mothers card is also linked-she doesn't have a car so we will use her discounts.

One needs to choose between 4¢ or 2 QFF points per litre. For most, the 4¢ would be better value IMHO.

Myself, I endeavour to achieve slightly more than 2¢ per point value so it's borderline.

e.g. a 30 litre fill for $36 - save $1.20 and earn 52 QFF for $34.80 on your $1:1½ point Amex or earn 114 QFF points for $36.

According to EDR site, I received a saving of $118.18 last year. So at 4c/l that would imply 2,954.5 litres. So that would have been 5909 QFF points under that option.

That is enough points for a one-way short domestic upgrade, or almost 75% of the points for a short domestic award. Given I can pay around $120 for a short domestic flight, I am going to retain the fuel saving option.

Does it get worse or better if you regularly get bigger fuel savings discounts? Buy some fresh food get 16¢, buy some medicinal product get 8¢, etc...

As the rate for points adjusts proportionally with the discount offers, I don't think it makes any difference. Its all about how useful those extra points will be to you. If you are a few points short of a goal award, then it could be very good value to opt for the points. Likewise if you use them as part of a better value award than those I described, then it could also be good value. Its going to be different for each person depending on their earning capability (i.e. how much fuel you buy) and burning goals.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Fair enough on the choices people are making but I'm still struggling to see the basis of these decisions. There is a transparent way to measure the cost of points when buying fuel but what is lacking is a comparable measure for other methods of earning points. What is the cost of the merchant fee when making a purchase with a card? There are reports on here of 2+% for premium cards. That would suggest that some cards points are costing 1.3 cents per point and others much more. 2 cents per point is pretty much in that ballpark.

The other thing is that comparing the 2 cpl to how people value the points is really comparing the the cost of earning with the redeemed value achieved. I'm not convinced that is valid as there is little doubt that qantas "sells" points for more than it costs them when the points are redeemed.

Anyway it is a vexed question determining the cost and the value of a point. I do shop around for my fuel, so fuel vouchers are somewhat pointless for me. But I will make sure that any points I earn from buying fuel are only redeemed at a face value >2 cpl. ;)

QF points also have minimum of 18 month expiry, whereas fuel vouchers only last 30 days.

That is irrelevant. You still are required to have accrued a fuel voucher. That voucher is used in exchange for the 2c/l in lieu of a 4c/l discount.

I guess, yes. I wasn’t feeling particularly bright this morning :p

For me, with no CC earning potential, it makes sense. It’s also useful that my car doesn’t drink too much, so as I mentioned, the fuel savings are pretty low to me, but then I guess the earning potential might be too. It’s still better value to me earning the point however. :D

The value of a QFF point has been discussed many times.

Last Friday Qantas allowed me to redeem 150,000* QFF points in upgrading to PE LHR-SIN and J SIN-MEL for SWMBO and myself.

Considering the travel was on LONE4's which cost ~AUD3400, IMHO that represents value of a lot more than 2¢ per point.

*I was hoping to spend 192,000 all up, but no luck for Business class out of London - with the Singapore F1 GP, J was basically sold out for Friday's QF10. Well, PE is better than WHY!

Indeed but that is the face value of a point for redemption. (not the underlying value or real cost to QF of providing the award) Not the cost of earning the point in the first place.

In that example where the value is much greater than 2 cents per point then surely buying (some of) the points for 2 cents per point does represent good value.

My example of a J SIN-FRA on the face value of the money saved I reckon my points were worth 4 cents a point. It seems a no brainer to me if I can forgo a fuel discount to get points at 2 cents per point.

Or is there something wrong with my thinking?

whereas 14,500 pts = $100 Woolworths gift card values 2 points at about 1.4 cents.

I wonder if I can claim everyday rewards when using my company fleetcard to purchase petrol?

Until now I haven't tried claiming as my company pays for fuel so no point in saving 4c/litre but if I can get points I would start claiming.

You should be OK, they only exclude the Caltex card AFAIK.

Used it twice this week, shows up on their screen saying that the user has elected to earn points etc.

Also I tried it with my Everyday Money card on ePay, comes up with no discount voucher available.

I would think that it is OK.

I use a Motorpass card and it works with that one.
