QANTAS fares to LHR

So looked elsewhere and nearly booked Singapore Air for $6018 until I realised that one of the legs (SIN to LHR) was in economy.

Was that with Expedia? I find them very slippery when it comes to this - half business half economy. I have never seen this booking with SQ direct.

No it was on the Singapore airlines site.

I did quite a bit of shopping around.
My flights are June/July so peak prices.
I looked at ANZ Y+ was over $10000, Virgin Nearly $12000, Cathay $9500 and a few more.
I looked at Y flights to Asia e.g. to SIN and then Finnair J still worked out over $10000. Beyond my budget.

Hmm. Okay. Without knowing your exact specifications it is hard to know the prices. But from what I can see there are plenty of Business Class options in those months to/from those cities for $6000-$7000 return. All would be better than QF's Y+.

This is handy information, thanks ... but still doesn't explain the HUGE disparity between Qantas fares and those of other One World Airlines for the same dates!

I have no issue with QF charging as much as they can for a fare... they are a business after all. Consumers can exercise their ability to find other products (like you've done), if they are not happy with the price etc.

If QF prices themselves out of the market, they will shoot themselves in the foot... but they have revenue people looking after this and considering their recent profit, they seem to have people willing to pay for airfares.

If QF was wanting me to pay that much for Y+ to LHR, I'd also be looking at Finnair J. Happy travels, HEL is a lovely airport.

To second what others said, if you don't mind not landing in London but Paris or another EU capital, you can get cheap J fares (well, relative to QF Y+ pricing). For ex. for MEL-CDG in J mid June 2017 you can get $4K on air vietnam, $5K on air france + china southern, and $5.9K on Etihad.
Y+ on QF or J on Etihad? No choice at all, unless you need the SC.

flights.google.com if you haven't tried it before is pretty good at giving you an idea of prices at least for straight return trips, for multi-city it's not as good price wise but does show the airlines that you could use.

Why do people pay/book Y+ for this much when I am sure if you did some shopping around you could definitely get to Europe in J for that much?
They must be booking during peak times?
I paid $6.2 for return J seats with JAL back in July for the SYD-LHR route.

Just been looking for Per-Lhr next month. QF (on EK/QF) ~$9.5k with some of the options Dubai to Lhr and back in Economy!

SQ - $7.8k
QR - $6.6k
EY - $6.4k
EK - $7.4k

Was an easy decision for me which one to choose....

I am quite frankly amazed how uncompetitive QF is but people still book with them!

Is that for 1 person or two?

Just looked up Etihad J for our dates for the multi city it is $20000 for 2
Looked at just turn to Paris in J $11770
Finnair in J $13577 for multi city return pretty much the same.
Vietnam Air can't fly into Milan but return to and from Paris $9417

These are all for my dates give or take a day or 2 i picked the cheapest.
I could not afford any of these flights.

I got my Y+ for $6900 for 2 people. Yes I know it is not business but its the best deal that we could get for a more comfortable flight than economy at a peak time. We flew to NYC last year in Business with Qantas and Cathay so I know the difference.

But we can spend the extra dollars on our trip.

That is a decent price. It might just be me but I wasn't at all clear that those figures you were quoting in your original post were for two people. I think that's why the discussion around J fares ensued.

Thanks Princes Fiona for your comment.

I am always green with envy when I read of your wonderful flights. But I love reading about them.
I love flying (I could spend all day at the airport watching planes and people!)
And my biggest passion is travel and the planning and the memorable experiences along the way, both planned and unplanned!

Me too :)
Thanks for your kind words. I hope you have a fantastic trip and are able to share it here with us.

I have never actually flown Premium Economy at all so I'd love to know if it's worthwhile paying for over Y.

The service in Y+ is excellent. The seats? Not so much unless you jag the exit row in which case they are fabulous. Of course, angled.

Agree! Service is very good.

The seats though, for me are good. Mostly because I don't have my knees around my ears for 10+ hours. Little on the tallish side. Just that extra 3 or 4 inches of pitch makes the world of difference. I don't think I could do long haul in Y anymore.

(mind you, still go J if the price is right)

Oh! I didn't realise the $6900 was for 2 people! That is a very good price at $3500 return.

My apologies!

mid Sept pricing
Air Asia PER-KUL flat bed roundtrip AU$750
SriLankan KUL-CMB-LHR biz saver (I) AU$2055 biz value (D) AU$2515

Though booking the biz saver is "unreliable" at three weeks in advance so say AU$3.2K

Happy wandering

Fred

PS The Srilankan biz saver is about the same as BA in economy. The MH Biz Promo fare is about AU$3500.

No problems.
Participating in airline discussions always widens ones thoughts on who and how to fly. I've learnt lots of ideas as well.

So it's not a place were you can recline and sleep all the flight !

SYd to LHR is $5557 return in J on EY which has fares on sale until 5 Sep for travel up to 30 June 2017.
Not One World but beats QF Y+ any day. :)
Even less to CDG or FRA.
