Today's Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age newspaper:

Australia's aircraft engineers claim that three mishaps in three days to Boeing's 787 Dreamliner aircraft highlights the need for Qantas - a buyer of the planes - to retain a large maintenance workforce.

I can't believe Jetstar could have a 787 by the end of this year!

''People need to start to realise that if you are going to fly an aircraft at 40,000 feet (12,190 metres), you can't just pull off to the side of the road and phone the NRMA to come and help. Aircraft now are complex.''

As for their claims, neither can you do much with an engineer on the ground and the plane at 40,000 feet. The JAL 787 wasn't even in Japan when the problem arose too, not much good having a huge workforce of engineers in the wrong country :p
 
It will make JQ7/8 that much more enticing.

I'll wait till I see the Jetstar configuration (ie just how high density are they talking!)

If they add a proper (decent?) business class, they might start stealing the Qantas 767 business customers who are left... will be interesting to see if they decide to go with something more than the usual.

During the 787 Tour last year according to both Boeing and JQ reps the plane will be 3x3x3 and the Business will be the same as now. So now huge improvement in comfort just more profit :D

Even a Mk I seat would be an improvement.

I would have thought that was contrary to their business model, more to increase the market than divide it.

you don't want qantas j customers, you want deathstar pax to want to fly star class, albeit for the first time.

  1. Introduce new product but retain high density
  2. Win praise and start taking QF premium pax
  3. Give Jetstar it's own IPO and split the business (from Qantas)
  4. Jetstar buys Qantas, planes get rebranded with the Qantas brand, but keep Jetstar's lower wages
  5. Profit?

Yes I've noticed that too; the Sydney Morning Telegraph now.
 
Of course they see a risk in new aircraft....

I also see a risk every time I cross the road.
