Is it me or is there a strong element of spin in some of this article? In particular:

The UK departure tax, called the air passenger duty (APD), is higher for UK flights departing for Australia that hub through Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok than for flights that hub through Dubai when passengers stay at the hub point for 24 hours or more, which is true for a high percentage of passengers.

Is it really the case that a "high percentage of passengers" stay (or will stay) at the hub point for 24 hours or more? I've never caught LHR-SIN flights on QF, but I have caught QF9 (and EK's comparable service) from MEL-SIN numerous times and sometimes you'd be lucky to have more than 70 or 80 passengers at the carousel waiting for luggage (or indeed exiting with hand luggage), suggesting that a "high percentage" of passengers are actually in transit and not stopping for more than 24 hours. And thus no savings when it comes to APD.

About 3 months in fact - saw a LH 747 at Perth International about 3 months ago.

OK can I change it to "it has been a long time since LH have landed a a scheduled passenger aircraft in Australia"?

Technically dajop the aircraft was both scheduled no carried passengers ;)

There may have been one in Nov 2010, but there was certainly one about about 3 months ago too - I did a double take when I saw it there.

Can't find anything on Jetspotters about it.

From Wikipedia (so not necessarily accurate), A330-300 full range is 13,430km (fully loaded)

From GC map ADL-DXB is 10,997 and BNE-DXB is 11,997. So the indication is that the A333 could get there.
I guess now that there is a part QF metal option that is one stop to continental Europe there may be a lot more demand for the seats on the two QF A380's to DXB - is there a possibility that there won't be enough seats on those 2x A380's from SYD/MEL - DXB? (and likewise will they be flying DXB-LHR half empty as a lot of pax got off at DXB and transferred to a EK flight to the continent/Africa/other Middle East destination?). There may well be a demand for QF to run A330-300's to DXB from PER/BNE - hopefully they have left room in the agreement for that rather than just limiting themselves to 2 flights to DXB per day out of SYD/MEL.

Vienna boys choir?
No idea - all I can remember was that I was outbound to somewhere and it was in a standoff position. I guess though if it was the Vienna Boys Choir then they would be on Austrian Airlines rather than a German airline.

I am not sure where you are getting 13,430km's from.

The airbus website itself has this -
Range | Airbus, a leading aircraft manufacturer
The A330-300 seats 295 passengers in a typical three-class cabin layout over a range of up to 5,850 nm/10,800 km, powered by PW4000, RR Trent 700 or GE CF6-80E1 engines.

The 330-200 has
Range | Airbus, a leading aircraft manufacturer
The A330-200 seats 253 passengers in a typical three-class cabin layout over a range of up to 7,250 nm/13,400 km, powered by PW4000, RR Trent 700 or GE CF6-80E1 engines.

The 330-200 may have the legs, but the issue is QF only have 4 of them in international configuration.

There is a lot of hoo-haa about this being fairly groundbreaking which undoubtedly it is for QF. What is interesting that it not really that innovative or groundbreaking, the European airlines cottoned onto this years ago, albeit in reverse. It has been a long time since LH or KL have landed an aircraft in Australia, they worked out long ago they could access a broader range of Australian cities by codesharing with Asian carriers such as MH, TG or SQ. This I guess is exactly the same approach in reverse, although admittedly LH made their arrangements under the alliance umbrella, KL didn't.

Never a truer word spoken.

Flying to Israel will be a problem in this new agreement. Admittedly not the biggest market, but an important one nonetheless.

How is it any more of a problem than it was before? It's not like Qantas flew there, and unless I am mistaken Qantas codeshare on El Al out of BKK. There is nothing out to suggest this will have changed.

Only if there's no headwind, and don't plan on having much reserves. Not quite viable, I think.

And funny enough, if you need/want to transit in Singapore, EK can get you there as well from MEL/BNE.

It seems that there are still missing pieces of the puzzle. QF intends to retime the HKG and SIN flight for better Asian connections. In HKG, there's KA, but for anyone connecting to KA, there's no reason for them not to be on CX for the first leg. And then from SIN... what exactly are pax connecting to? If they are taking Asia seriously, Jetstar is not going to cut it. It has its place in the market, but it's not exactly where you want to connect your premium pax to.

So the "Falcon Route" has gone already - it's now the "Eagle Route" - QF, EK deal has massive potential for Aus: industry - Industry News - etravelblackboard.com - hopefully with a bit of push from here we can make it something more exotic like the "Arabia Route" or "Ali Baba Route"

GF have long been known as the Golden Falcon for obvious reasons.

As for the 'Arabia' or 'Ali Baba' route, how very Orientalist.

On another note, you may take a Falcon on board between DXB and desinations in Pakistan. See Baggage | FAQs | Emirates

EY allows Falcons to be transported to more destinations in the cabin.

Falcons
The carriage of animals in the cabin is restricted to falcons only and is permitted on all types of aircraft subject to the following conditions:
Diamond First Class
Up to 2 falcons per guest (per seat) are permitted. Charge for each falcon (which is considered 3 kg) is 3 times the normal excess baggage rate of the journey.
Up to 2 additional falcons can be carried when an extra seat is purchased within same class. No excess baggage charges for the additional falcons will apply.
Pearl Business Class
Up to 2 falcons per guest (per seat) are permitted. Charge for each falcon (which is considered 3 kg) is 3 times the normal excess baggage rate of the journey.
Up to 2 additional falcons can be carried when an extra seat is purchased within same class. No excess baggage charges for the additional falcons will apply.
Coral Economy Class
1 falcon per guest (per seat) is permitted. Charge for one falcon (which is considered 3 kg) is 3 times the normal excess baggage rate of the journey.
1 additional falcon can be carried when an extra seat is purchased within same class. No excess baggage charges for the additional falcon will apply.
Note: The charge for each additional seat purchased will be the fare applicable for an adult guest occupying the seat. This applies to all travel classes and charges will depend on the number of seats, the travel class and sector of travel. Guests are not entitled to any additional free baggage allowance for the additional seat(s) purchased for falcons. Per UAE Civil Aviation norms, no piece of baggage may exceed 32 kg in weight or 80 inches in dimension.

Agreed, and I think this deal could benefit IAG as well now that they're not forced to fly all the way Oz as a part of the JSA. They now have the option of replacing flights to SYD with either CX or MH options.

I guess that 2 could do PER-DXB-PER and the other 2 BNE-PER-BNE - obviously a fifth one would be handy to cover major maintenance etc, but all of this is only if they have allowed for it in the agreement. If they haven't and they can only fly 2 A380's per day to DXB then they may have missed out on some serious opportunities out of other Australian cities that would still enable customers to fly QF metal from Australia to LHR.

What about Codeine? It's an over the counter drug here, and heavily restricted, if not banned in UAE. How do you get a prescription for that?

Drugs in Dubai

People have been arrested in Dubai for possession of Codeine: Dubai tourists warned over tough drug stance - Middle East - World - The Independent

That said, I know the rules and would never take anything there. I do wonder about the general travelling public though. Of course, Dubai is now a big tourist destination, particularly for those in Europe and news of any issues is extremely rare (the case above was in 2005).

As the the xenophobia, the UAE has a lower crime rate than either Thailand or Malaysia, the US and even (wait for it), Australia. Not sure what the issues are with that. I've travelled extensively in the middle east including to the UAE, Syria, Bahrain, Jordon and must say I felt less safe in Bangkok than any of them.

Relax on the prescription medication. I lived in Dubai and most of the stuff we have to have a script for here can be brought over the counter in the UAE.

The UAE is a very civilised country and very safe (as long as you are not doing anything stupid).

Do the falcons get a meal?

No idea - all I can remember was that I was outbound to somewhere and it was in a standoff position. I guess though if it was the Vienna Boys Choir then they would be on Austrian Airlines rather than a German airline.

Assuming Austrian have appropriate aircraft.
