Qantas driving value for shareholders

Interesting he mentioned the Gold Coast.

Qantas Frequent Flyer also continues to increase the aspirational appeal of the Qantas brand through innovations such as Platinum One.

However I'm not sure he has the right idea about Platinum One. Yes, the appeal was aspirational when it was launched, but since then it's become a bit more of a joke.

As a bad example, had it been as aspirational as he thinks, I could have booked flight in the DSC to achieve it. However I simply don't see it as worthwhile. Not really aspirational.

The biggest problem at Qantas is the disconnect between the workers and top management. This is what is causing QF shares to be languishing around $1.60 when clearly if the workers trusted senior management that price would change in my opinion.
The Frequent Flyer program is probably worth the whole $1.60 of the share price.
Fixing worker unrest is the biggest task for top management especially when there is going to be structural changes in heavy maintenance.
There is a boom going on out of Perth to our mining areas but QF is very Sydney centric and has been a late entrant to serving mining companies.

The last thing the market cares about is whether Qantas staff and management are making friends and singing Kumbaya together. Investors are worried about structural issues e.g. competitors causing international market share loss, fuel costs, fleet costs, fleet mix, borrowing costs, regulation, alliances...

Qantas could have the happiest staff in the world and it wouldn't make a difference to any of these factors. The idea that the big institutional investors who control the capital markets are really influenced by staff/management relations seems pretty fanciful to me, especially in an industry that is facing so many other challenges.

There are little or no profits being made by all the international carriers regardless of where they are based. Emirates, Air New Zealand, Qantas, Singapore and others are making zilch at the moment. Fuel remains the biggie in creating unreliable earnings in Qantas.
It is not a matter of being friends but more having a relationship with the work force that can constructively work together to lower operating costs and seek out the profitable routes away from Sydney.

"By the end of this year our fleet renewal will be substantially completed, giving us one of the world's best 21st century fleets - and unlocking significant flexibility in our forward fleet commitments and reducing our maintenance costs."

(Falls about laughing)

Just had some flights on 767s, a couple of the older 738s and what I think is the oldest 744... those interiors are not at all well maintained.

Do you really believe some of the cough you speak, Allan?
