Qantas domestic economy meals

I fly a lot of regional flights. The are actually very tasty. I would like to find that onion relish No kitchen on the dash 8 400 so you just have to suck it up. Mostly give you a wine or beer though. Luckily I have access to the lounges. Can’t blame Qantas for the aircraft unfortunately, especially for an hour in the air.

Who else is there to blame for the aircraft if not the airline?!

They could provide something more substantial like a sandwich.

Not going to disagree but for a short flight
It’s more than enough for me. The olives, cheese and salami aren’t quite as tasty but not bad. Same service if you are p1 or bronze. And Jetstar would charge you $14 for a beer and the same snack. I fly Brisbane to Canberra on the dash 8 and it’s not the best but I would rather have the frequency than less flights with the jets. If you don’t have lounge access I can see how it might upset you. Bonus if you fly cns tsv mky rok you get 4 snacks and 4 drinks in 2 hours. Unfortunately no extra sc or points

Salami and cheese would at least be more than a few nuts and dry crackers.

I don't see what Jetstar has to do with it though? I'm not flying Jetstar. I'm paying a premium foy fly QF so I don't expect to pay $14 for a beer. In fact at the time of booking the flight was close to $600 for the Dash 8 flight. Hence I booked the 45 minute later flight at least than half that cost. Still expensive for a short flight though.

It's really not the length of the flight that's important. QF should think about it from the pax perspective. Heck, charge another $10 on top of the extortionate fare already and offer a sandwich. No one is going to notice the difference between $260 and $270 for that short flight.

I had a similar experience recently in a Dash-8 from Griffith to Sdyeny. No lounge (or even cafe) at GFF so was hoping for a sandwich on the lunchtime flight. Nup, just the crackers and nuts…

Agreed, except here. How long do we really think it would take QF after upping airfares $10 on this route before the application of that revenue to service was enhanced away into dividends and profits?

Or to make it less hypothetical: how much of the price increases we've seen over the last 12-24 months went to genuine improvements in service?

QF1920 BNE-GLT op Alliance dep 0555 a/c E90

Light snack of apple and cinnamon muffin cake, made by our QantasLink friends, Dreamtime Tuka.

I pocketed the cake and Coke, opting to nap on the flight thanks to my early morning start. Ate the cake later for morning tea. Quite moist and tasty cake, obviously packed with sugar.

Daughter flew home from Mel on QF781 19:55pm departure.

Qantas advertises hot meal on all trans con flights, which is totally misleading.

By the time they got to her, all hot meals had been taken, leaving a cold Chicken salad. No choice but to eat as she was hungry.

She said taste was okay but totally inappropriate for a evening meal especially for this time of year.

I had that exact same meal in February on a MEL-CHC international flight. It was by far the best of the three options and agree - taste was pleasant enough and it definitely felt like a summer meal.

The salads do seem to be the best of the offerings at the moment. Tasty and relatively healthy, especially compared to pasta carbs in a box. Agree - they’re not very wintry though.

Can't think of a time that a salad is ever wintery!

I wonder what the hot option was that @cosi 's daughter missed out on. It probably wasn't as wholesome as the salad, which does look decent, though I wonder if that's rice at the base there, because that looks a bit suss.

I mean, the hot meal could have just been some meat stew (e.g. beef, tomato and red wine) with peas and mash. Don't care what season it is, but if it were up to me, between that and that salad I'd say it's a line ball decision.

I'm not sure about all other carriers that serve complimentary Y meals, but I think you just hope to get something tasty and has some sustenance in it (viz. in order to stave off starvation, a la what @cosi 's daughter was feeling). One day, Y meals just might be a concentrated food pill, maybe with simulated flavour (heck, why aren't we all at that point yet)

The salad option is usually my 1st choice even (even on the rare occasion I'm in business) and it is mainly it is extremely hard to stuff up a salad and it generally looks more appealing than some of the other options shown above

SYD-CBR on the usual Dash8, 2pm departure

It was actually quite a tasty snack, which was enough for the 45 minute flight.

And of course, the complimentary red wine helped, served in the finest glassware - which I don't mind as you can hang onto them after they have cleared up and not have to rush down the last few drops.

On the run up to Sydney, on a Dash8-300 they only had one flight attendant. She managed to not only singlehandedly using trays, serve the snacks, then on the next run through the cabin wine and beer, and then the soft drinks, and a final top-up run for more wine and beers. I sent in a 'Well Done' email to Qantas to say how well she had done, especially as the flight had been delayed by 2 hours and was packed due to cancellations.

EDIT: I meant to say 45 minute flight - now fixed

Unfortunately my daughter did not know what the hot option.

For the 5pm flight from Per-Mel, the hot option was sausage's, mash, peas & gravy which she said was very tasty and hit the spot

I agree - I think the salads are provided by a different caterer to the hot meals in a box, which is a bit more premium not just slop in a bucket.
