Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Saturday 18 July's QF80 (A333 VH-QPA) was the 2025 hours NRT-MEL airborne at 2054, more or less punctual. However it diverted to BNE (medical?) and was airborne from there at 0918 on Sunday 19 July with MEL gate arrival becoming a forecast 1123 hours, 223 minutes late.

In consequence, since it is forming its own, QF79, the 0935 hours MEL-NRT is expected to optimistically depart at 1230 hours. 1300 hours or later is probably more realistic.

Sister aircraft -QPD arrived in MEL at 0726 on Sunday 19, only six minutes late as QF30 from HKG overnight.

It is also forming its own with QF29, the 1015 hours MEL-HKG put back to a forecast 1300 hours departure this afternoon. Possibly another example as to how these long in the tooth A333s increasingly require maintenance3/repairs at short notice, @tomlee1986 ?

Tonight's QF30 (to MEL) and QF128 (to SYD) are both showing as punctual but this is impossible.

QF10 from LHR to PER (B789 VH-ZNF) should arrive on Sunday at about 1303 hours, 68 minutes late as on Saturday this 1155 hours scheduled departure wasn't in the sky until 1300 hours.

As sometimes happens with FR24, it has two lines devoted to the QF93 (0945 hours MEL-LAX) that is operated by B789 VH-ZNL and expected to arrive early in Los Angeles. The second line claims it won't depart Melbourne until 2336 hours tonight. I don't know why this duplication occurs.

1300 departure - that could mean parts shipped from SYD to MEL for replacement of parts??

And because 127 to HKG took off on time from SYD - should be only 1 having the delay… not both of the 2 aircrafts- the SYD one is QPF, but QPD is the one with NO wifi installed - I wonder how long QFi will keep it?!

Continuing with Sunday 19 July, QF79 (0935 hours MEL up to NRT) departed at 1313 hours, taking off at 1328 with A333 VH-QPA. Expected gate arrival time becomes about 2212 hours, 182 minutes late.

IIRC the Narita airport, Japan curfew only allows takeoffs and landings between 2300 and 0000 hours in exceptional circumstances. I assume QFi will somehow be able to meet this criteria as it is most unlikely it could take off prior to 2300 Japan time tonight, even though aircraft turnarounds in the Land of the Rising Sun are usually extremely efficient.

QPA & QPD - I assume QFi might retire them in near future with no major upgrades on these airframes

@Melburnian1 do you know why last night's MEL-MQL flew to MQL, but didn't land? and returned to MEL?

or why today's SYD-MQL ended up landing / go-round, but went back to SYD?

Looking at the FlightAware site, on Saturday 18 July QF2076, the 1845 hours from MEL due at Mildura at 2005 made a couple of attempts to land. At a guess, the airport was fogged in.

QF1403 this morning (if I have the flight number correct) was the 0855 hours SYD-MQL timetabled to arrive at 1055. Highly likely it was a similar case of fog. I've been to enough rural locations in Oz to see fog only clearing at c.1030-1130 hours.

In more on Sunday 19 July, the delay to the timetabled 1015 hours MEL-HKG QF29 has increased further with proposed pushback altering from 1430 to 1700 late this afternoon.

Unfortunately, assuming the flight operates and isn't cancelled, gate arrival in HKG should be after midnight. On my visits I've never had a substantial delay but from memory, the important airport train service doesn't operate at 0100 in the small hours.

The delay to Sunday 19 July's QF29 from MEL to HKG has increased, with a new proposed pushback at 1430 hours.
Further update: now ETD is 1700 at best!!

The train departs round midnight yes… but there are late night buses

Oh dear.

QF29 has been updated: it should depart MEL on Sunday 19 July at 1830 hours, 510 minutes later than the timetabled midmorning 1015 hours. A333 VH-QPD has the task.

As expected, presumably no spare suitable aircraft to take over the flight (assuming it's a problem with the A333).

Then this will cascade to tomorrow for QF128 - according to information, it is 0315 HKG departure!!!

Above, I speculated that due to the very late QF79 from MEL to NRT on Sunday 19 July (arriving at an estimated 2220 hours tonight with a curfew operative at Narita from 2300 hours), QF80 may be able to still depart.

As it turns out, QF80 NRT to MEL tonight is unaffected (being formed by QF61 from BNE).

Instead, QF62, the scheduled 2145 hours NRT-BNE has been delayed to depart Tokyo at 1430 mid afternoon on Monday 20 July, 885 minutes late. This should mean a BNE arrival about 2359-0030 on Monday 20-Tuesday 21. Loads of missed connections. No airport train to Brisbane's CBD or Gold Coast.

A333 VH-QPD on Sunday 19 July's QF29 (MEL to HKG) departed at 1828 hours, 493 minutes late and was airborne at 1844 hours.

Expected gate arrival becomes 0153 hours on Monday 20, 478 minutes late.

If the arrival time doesn't improve, 0315 hours as a suggested pushback for QF128 (HKG to SYD) seems somewhat optimistic. 0330 to 0345 may be more realistic, @tomlee1986 .

This move makes more sense from a network and big picture perspective the NRT - BNE route has always been a lot lower on demand than the MEL routes.

It'll majorly suck for everyone booked on board, but probably has lower impact comparatively. Also i do notice they swap the BNE/MEL aircrafts regularly at NRT regardless of delay as well.

Morning update- the flight did take off at 0340 and ETA is 1431
A333 VH-QPD on Sunday 19 July's QF29 (MEL to HKG) departed at 1828 hours, 493 minutes late and was airborne at 1844 hours.

A333 VH-QPL is on its fifth consecutive round trip SYD-HNL-SYD. The last three (including the current one) have been at least an hour late arriving in HNL, and the one before that was more than 45 minutes late.

The Sunday 19 July QF103 (the 2215 hours) took off from SYD at 2247, just beating curfew, arriving HNL a few minutes ago at 1206 hours, 131 minutes late. The 1150 hours scheduled QF104 on Sunday 19 from HNL down to SYD is optimistically expected to depart at 1330 hours.

On Saturday 18 July, QF3 from AKL to JFK (B789 VH-ZNJ) diverted to BOS: bad weather in New York necessitating a famous @Quickstatus fuel stop? It arrived in the latter at 2050 hours, 270 minutes late. The return QF4 from JFK down and across to AKL that normally would have departed on Saturday 18 at 1920 hours has been delayed overnight to a proposed 2320 hours late night on Sunday 19, meaning arrival in Auckland at about 0830 on Tuesday 21 July instead of 0455 hours on Monday 20. This will mean the B789 isn't back in Sydney until almost 1200 'high noon' tomorrow, instead of 0820 hours this morning.

Because of this overnight B789 delay, QF255 from SYD to SIN and on to CDG in France, the 1400 hours ex SYD on Monday 20, has been cancelled. QF256 at 0905 hours ex CDG on Tuesday 21 and 0620 hours ex SIN on Wednesday 22 July has also been given the boot.

Continuing with Monday 20 July, QF19, the 1225 hours SYD-MNL is expected to depart at 1400 with A333 VH-QPG. This plane arrived in Sydney this morning at 0827 hours, 28 minutes early as QF60, the overnighter from Japan's HND.

A388 VH-OQC is operating the 1200 hours 'high noon' SYD-DFW airborne at 1315 with gate arrival on the same day said to be about 1306 hours, 36 behind.

UPDATE: QF19's suggested departure has been further revised to mid afternoon - 1530 hours. This should mean QF20 back overnight from MNL down to SYD departs after 2300 hours, instead of the timetabled 2035.
