Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Does anyone know why QF8 DFW-SYD has diverted to land in Cairns this morning?
Delayed takeoff. May have returned to the gate (FT) And took a very northerly route over USA. Weather?

The aircraft in CNS (B789 VH-ZNC) as the diverted QF8 has an estimated departure time of 1100, in three minutes from as I write.

QF63, the 0935 hours SYD-JNB is delayed until a predicted mid to late afternoon 1625 hours pushback as a consequence. QF64 will be similarly delayed. It's that horrible sort of delay when it isn't long enough for an airline to realistically place passengers in hotels (given the insanely earl;y pickup time from the hotel by bus that airlines insist upon prior to the rescheduled departure). Instead, pax will probably just have to wait at JNB until say 0200 local time for boarding, if not later. Lounge access may dull the boredom and pain with the air of some alcohol but otherwise, no fun.

QF20 from MNL arrived on Friday 27 January at 0805, 110 minutes late.

Interesting and very unusual to divert to CNS, usually goes to BNE if there are strong headwinds and it can't make it to SYD, and in the past Fiji or other Pacific Islands.

This evening's QF7 SYD-DFW was cancelled, and tomorrow's QF8 now also cancelled.

AKL airport was hugely affected by flooding. I haven't looked it up but may not yet have reopened. Water everywhere.

QF126 (Friday 27 January, the 1640 hours AKL-BNE) seems to have been one affected with A332 VH-EBN still there as of Saturday close to 1200 'high noon' local time.

AKL reopens for intl departures 5pm (24 hour closure) and intl arrivals tomorrow 4am (36 hour closure).

Lots of diversions yesterday.

Maybe due to aircraft (or crew) availability due to the AKL flooding, on Sunday 29 January 2023, QF63, the 0935 hours SYD-JNB A333 is expected to depart at 1230 (lunchtime).

QF87, the identically timetabled pushback but to ICN should depart at 1130 hours, 115 minutes behind schedule.

'The 23' is a timetabled midmorning 1030 hours SYD-BKK daily but is delayed until a suggested 1105 hours. It is also an A333.

A332 VH-EBG is rostered for QF143, the 0945 hours SYD-AKL but it had not taken off by 1046 AEDT. Unsurprising in view of the Kiwiland situation.

B789 VH-ZNE on the 1100 hours MEL-LAX QF93 should depart half an hour late, but could well pick up time on its journey.

On Saturday 28, QF43 (1635 hours SYD-DPS) had A332 VH-EBC but was not airborne until 1940, so the return flight, QF44 (2120 hours ex Bali) took off at midnight, arriving SYD this morning 132 minutes tardy at 0842 hours.

Turn a Thursday Public Holiday into a 4 day long weekend, and all sorts of things happen.

B789 VH-ZNE on the 1100 hours MEL-LAX QF93 should depart half an hour late, but could well pick up time on its journey.
Although the QF8 diversion to Cairns didn't help, I think this reappearance of VH-ZNE is the root cause of all the B789 delays & cancellations over the last few days. Its previous flight, coincidentally QF8, touched down in Melbourne at 05:50 AEDT on Wednesday, then not seen again until today.
This evening's QF7 SYD-DFW was cancelled, and tomorrow's QF8 now also cancelled.
That was on Thursday - also cancelled were the connecting QF9 MEL-PER & QF10 PER-MEL flights with VH-ZNA turning around in Perth to operate that days QF9. It is currently making it's way to Melbourne with the second sector of the return QF10 (on time). Apparently no attempt by Qantas to put on alternative aircraft, for the cancelled sectors.

One other casualty appears to be the Chimu Antarctica Charter which was due to operate out of Perth today using a Qantas B789.

So to today's B789 delays, apart from QF93 already mentioned by Melbournian1, there were three other delays today...

QF63 SYD-JNB 3 hrs 14 min late departing Sydney this morning. With no appreciable time gain into Jo'Burg, the return QF64 is expected to depart 2 hrs 40 minutes late, with same delay into Sydney at 16:05 AEDT Monday.

Last nights QF22 DFW-MEL departed 61 minutes late, with a revised ETA into Melbourne at 0637 AEDT Monday, 52 minutes late.

Today's QF27 SYD-SCL was 3 minutes short of 3 hours late departing Sydney with the arrival in Santiago predicted to be exactly 3 hours late at 13:15 CLST. The return QF28 is expected to be 1hr 45 minutes late, with the same delay into Sydney for a 19:35 AEDT arrival on Monday.

Still catching up, found another contributor to the B789 delays - ZNB has been sitting in Sydney since arriving with QF12 a few minutes late at 08:46 AEDT on Friday morning.

Any guesses as to why QF139 to Christchurch diverted seemingly last minute to Auckland?

Christchurch is curfew free and I would've thought that Auckland is the one with problems right now.

I have a friend of a friend travelling SYD-xCHC-AKL on this flight (last minute seats after Air Asia X dumped them in Sydney on their way in to Auckland from KL), who will be happy to have now inadvertently ended up on a direct service.

QF 128 from HKG to SYD (first flight for 3 years) arrived at 0723 instead of 0640 this morning) - 49 mins late. It was VH-QPF operating

On Tuesday 31 January 2023, QF19, the 1225 hours lunchtime SYD-MNL A333 is expected to depart at 1715 hours, 290 minutes late.

Sister A333 VH-QPB had the day off in Sydney yesterday after arriving as QF88 from ICN at 1138 hours, 203 minute stardy, but this didn't assist a timely departure on 31. It was airborne this morning at 1108 hours so a 59 minutes late arrival at 1919 hours is the prediction.

A332 VH-EBP arrived in MEL this morning as QF36 ex SIN at 0616 hours, only six minutes late, but it formed an extremely late QF69, the 0920 hours MEL-DEL up up and away at 1257 hours. Expected at gate arrival becomes 1956 hours, 206 minutes late, which will badly delay redeye QF70 back down to Melbourne.

'The SYD to LAX '11' is also having a bad day with A388 VH-OQK taking off at 1344, not long ago. Expected same day gate arrival is proposed for 0800 hours, 115 minutes behind schedule.

A388 VH-OQH on 'the 2' from LHR last night (the 2040 hours) was in the sky at 2151 so this evening, SIN at gate estimated arrival should be at about 1813 hours, 43 late, making an arrival in Sydney tomorrow morning within 15 minutes of the scheduled 0610 hours extremely unlikely. This is a common theme for this flight.

B789 VH-ZNG is on QF9 from PER up to LHR with suggested at gate arrival becoming 0552 hours, 47 behind.

The almost constant badly late runner QF104 from HNL to SYD looks to be arriving at its designated gate tonight at 2053 hours, 133 minutes behind schedule. VH-QPI is the A333 on its second consecutive tour of duty on this yo-yo. From observation, often an A333 does three trips each way on ths route before a rest or going on to another route.

Monday 30 January 2023's HND to SYD QF26 (A333 VH-QPD) did not take off until 0433 on Tuesday 31. One difficulty up there IIRC is the extremely limited slot times when aircraft are late, resulting in further delays.

SYD arrival was 1557 this afternoon, 367 minutes late.

This aircraft formed the scheduled 1225 hours SYD-MNL QF19 that departed at 1805, taking off at 1831, so expected at gate arrival local time becomes 2303 hours, 393 minutes behind schedule.

Unfortunately those on the QF20 redeye tonight will be delayed a similar number of hours, but again it's a delay where it probably isn't worth the airline's while to pop passengers into an hotel because by the time that was organised and a conservative (earlier than needed) time for pickup by bus from the hotel(s) was set, there wouldn't be much if any opportunity for shuteye.

Morning everyone: QF22 DFW MEL VH-ZND is diverted to AKL this morning (6am 01/02/2022) after a 3 hr delay in take off - do not have estimated arrival time as yet

QF22 has just touched down in Melbourne, over-all 5 hours 30 minutes late by time it gets to the arrival gate

Edit : curious, FlightAware says QF22 took off at 19:26 CST from Dallas, which matches what Qantas flight status says, however inspection of the FlightAware Speed & Altitude chart shows the delayed take off was 22:14 CST.

Further digging shows FlightRadar24 has take off as 22:13 CST.
