Qantas Delays/Cancellations

The positioning flights are to increase utilisation. For example, on Tue-Thu when QF9/10 doesn’t operate between MEL-PER-MEL, the aircraft is used on services ex SYD.

No doubt QFi accountants do the sums, but at face value it's an expensive way to have an aircraft in place for a flight. Shaves any gross profit margin...

B789 VH-ZNB on Boxing Day formed QF21, 1400 hours afternoon flight MEL-DFW taking off at 1447 hours for claimed arrival at gate at 1329 hours, 44 minutes late on the same day.

The QF2 delayed in SIN by what was probably the need for a previous crew to have sufficient (mandated) rest (A388 VH-OQJ) took off on 26 December 2022 at 2243 hours, so SYD arrival on Tuesday 27 becomes 0907 hours, 177 minutes tardy.

The QF1 aircraft that diverted to GYD (Baku) on Friday morning local time 23 December 2022, A388 VH-OQH, took off from there at 2141 hours on Monday 26 December with SYD arrival during the mid evening of Tuesday 27 estimated for this empty flight QF6026 at 2039 hours.

QF1 (1705 hours late afternoon SYD-SIN-LHR on Tuesday 27 December) has A388 VH-OQJ that took off at 1814 hours. Expected intermediate stop arrival becomes 2252, 42 late, making a punctual arrival in London very difficult.

B789 VH-ZND arrived LHR this morning as QF9 ex PER at 0536 hours, 31 minutes behind schedule. VH-OQB was not far behind, arriving at gate at 0650, a similar 35 late as QF1.

Wednesday : today's QF21 (B789 VH-ZNH) has been delayed 2 hours for a revised Sydney departure of 16:00 AEDT, with a similar delay on arrival into Santiago. While no delay is as yet posted for the return QF22, I doubt they can turn it around in the 45 minutes left.

EDIT : Senior moment & grandchildren distraction - yes should read Melbourne & Dallas : QF21 pushed back at 15:47 & took off at 16:03 AEDT, and still plenty of time in Dallas for an on time departure of QF22.

Don't QF27/28 run between SYD and SCL, and QF21/22 MEL-DFW?

I suspect you are referring to the latter, which is not from Sydney but commences in Melbourne.

Thursday : Seems the US weather has come into play with QF22 now shown as departing Dallas at 22:00 CST, 2 hrs 50 minutes late, with revised Melbourne ETA of 07:55 AEDT Friday.

Weather has also impacted QF8, with its Dallas departure now 23:25 CST Thursday - a 26 hour delay, and consequent Sydney ETA of 09:30 AEDT Saturday

On Thursday 29 December 2022, A332 VH-EBE on QF43 (the afternoon 1635 hours SYD-DPS) took off at a much delayed 2051, so expected at gate arrival should be at around the 2352 hours mark, 232 minute stardy, delaying QF44 back down overnight to Sydney.

The aircraft had arrived in SYD this morning at 0609 hours ,just four minutes late on redeye QF654 across from PER, so a quick required turnaround is not to blame.

VH-EBS is on the much earlier 0920 hours MEL-DEL in India that should arrive at 1712, 42 behind.

A388 VH-OQB is on QF1 (1705 hours afternoon up to SIN and then LHR) that was airborne at 1815 so anticipated at gate time in Lion City is 2256 hours, 46 late.

QF22 DFW-MEL (B789 VH-ZNH) pushed back at 22:35 CST, and eventually took off at 23:02 CST, 3 hrs 52 minutes late. ETA Melbourne now either 07:48 AEDT ! (Qantas Flight Status) or between 08:56 & 09:10 AEDT per various Flight Trackers.

It ended up arriving at 0852 at gate (allowing five minutes from landing time).

Sometimes the QF flight status on its website doesn't seem to update for a while. This may have been the cause.

I think QF is one 789 frame short to operate tomorrow’s schedule on time. So there could be a delay or cancellation. Terminating QF10 in PER could be the most likely.

Looks like the MEL-PER sector of QF9 and PER-MEL sector of QF10 is being replaced by a 738 to cover the frame stranded in DFW.

As the replacement aircraft (B738 VH-XZN) operated both services, QF10 Melbourne passengers had a 5 hr 29 minute delay in Perth, to eventually arrive in Melbourne at 01:32 AEDT Sunday - a slightly less Happy New Year perhaps.

This change was required due to the two New Year's Eve Midnight Antarctica charters, one from Melbourne (B789 VH-ZNB) and one from Sydney ( VH-ZNG) taken two aircraft off normal revenue services at the same time.
